I have just installed new 20 inch rims. Every time a hit even a small bump in the road they hit the body. Is this normal or do I have to reduce the tire size. Looking for help. I have a 2005 XLR which I love the way the rims look, but the hitting is driving me crazy.
Can the car be raised to except the rims.

Thank you ahead of time.

I'm not an expert on this, but I know that there are several pieces of information that will be needed for someone to give you good advice. What wheel and tire size did you go to and did you match the wheel offset to the the original specs.

It sounds like you either went with the wrong wheel offset or the tire size does not match the original tire diameter.

If you go to Discount Tire or one of the other online tire stores they show how to match plus size wheel and tire combinations so they will work on your car. When you increase wheel size you need to adjust tire size so there is no increase in total diameter AND you need to match the original wheel offset so the wheel and tire properly line up in the wheel well and don't hit the inner fender.

Hope this gets you on the right track

I used 245/40/20 I do not know if these were the proper tires. I had a company called AutoGear recommend these and they said they were the ones for this car.

That sounds like a good tire size - I found on another wheel/tire website that they recomment 255/35-20s, but the difference between those and what you have should not be that much. There are several other members that have installed 20" wheels and I have not heard of problems from them. You may want to do a search of the site to see what you can find. It sounds like you may not have the correct offset on your wheels.

xlrman:

The tire size you have chosen should work with no problem. The offset has got to be the culprit.

You gotta be real careful and buy from someone knowledgeable when it comes to wheels. Not only is offset important for clearances, it is important for bearing wear. The bearings and hub assembly are not designed for bending loads; incorrect offset will cause that.

Don't raise the car. It'll look crapy and the handling will suffer.

See if this will help

Our guide recommends the following offsets for the width wheels you are looking at.

(information based on a 2006 XLR

8.5 wide 43-65mm offset
10 wide 62-65mm offset

*lower offsets push the wheel out, higher offsets tuck the wheel in more.

Staying within these ranges should minimize any rubbing that you may have.

Recommended tire sizes 245/40-20 Front, 275/35-20 Rear

I am not in your area, but I entered the name of your city in the 'installers' section of Discount Tires website (one of our site sponsors) and it brought up a whole list of businesses in your area. If no one else has a better idea I would suggest you contact one or more of these businesses and explain your problem.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!
