: Headlight Flickering???
tonypro99 11-21-2008, 01:14 AM My passenger side headlight seems to flicker like it's about to go out and to stop that I have to flick the highbeam switch to get it to stop doing it but then it goes out completely and then I have the drivers side highbeam on constantly. Only after driving about 100 KM does it go back to normal. Does anyone have a solution as if I take it to the dealer they say they can't reproduce the problem???
Video of what's happening--

Tony:
What year is the car??? There were some boosters that were replaced by Cadillac on the 2004 and 2005 models.
Another consideration based on what you describe is that you may have a short or a bulb going out.
Read the postings in the headlight topic and you'll be able to see the part numbers and some descriptions
Can you demonstrate the problem for them???
Just thoughts.....

Mine is doing the exact same thing. Did you ever get a diagnosis/fix? Thanks for posting.
ccclarke 02-27-2010, 12:28 AM You've described classic symptoms of a ballast assembly for the High Intensity Discharge lights going bad. The high voltage power supply keeps trying to fire the arc circuit and will eventually fail completely. Best case scenario: a bad bulb or poor electrical connection.

Umm, agree except that flicking high to low beam should have no effect, there is a simple metal shutter that flicks back and forth, there is only one lamp each side and it stays at the same brightness, position etc. all the time it is on. Its a D1S isn't it?
eicmike 03-02-2010, 07:46 AM New to the forum. Hope this is the right place for this posting. 2006 XLR w/ 4800 miles. New to me in Dec. '09. Im my garage since then. Waiting for the snow to melt. Driver's side hi beam doesn't work. Passenger side does work. A clicking noise on the passenger side is heard when the hi beams are turned on but not on the driver's side. Not familiar w/ the HID lighting system. Have the GMPP waranty but not sure if headlights are covered. I'd like to fix it myself if possible.
XLR I FL 06-07-2010, 09:58 PM I hope by now that you decided to take the car to the dealer.
The lights should be covered under the GMPP warranty.

eicmike 06-25-2010, 01:54 PM I finally brought it in this week. Dealer wants $1200 for a new headlamp, $151 for a cracked ignition pushbutton and $95 to reprogram the computer for a non-working convertible top. According to the dealer none of the items are covered under the GMPP warranty. I paid to have the programming completed but have to do some research before I pay for the other 2 items out of pocket. Contacted the selling dealer (different state). Waiting for a response. Any advice?

Don't pay anything out of your pocket if you have GMPP phone up Cadillac customer service and demand you want it taken care of. Don't settle for what the dealer says to you!
ccclarke 06-26-2010, 12:41 PM Buy a new headlamp for a few hundred less and iginition switch for half nearly price (only $26) from gmpd if they won't work with you. $150 to replace the switch is nuts. You can do it yourself for the cost of a switch. Replace the headlamp yourself and let them aim it to save even further. These are cars, not space shuttles.

eicmike 06-26-2010, 06:03 PM The selling dealer sent me an e-mail. GM is going to goodwill all 3 repairs. No money out of my pocket. Not even a deductible. The $1200 was for a headlight assembly not the lamp. My mistake. The hi-beam shutter isn't working. Thanks for the advice.
XLR I FL 06-27-2010, 08:35 PM CONGRATULATIONS!!!
It's nice to see some "wins" for our members.

coop-n-d-ville 02-15-2011, 02:25 PM My passenger side headlight seems to flicker like it's about to go out. When I switch on the high beams, the drivers side high beam will stay on, regardless of the position of the switch, until the car is turned off. I've tried to replace the headlight but the problem didn't go away. The replacement headlight worked fine when plugged into the driver's side.
I would appreciate any insight! Thanks.

I'm not sure I fully follow the description of the problem or problems.
1/ The XLR uses discharge headlamps. There is no high and low as such, there is a single 'lamp' that stays on all the time (in each side). High and low is achieved by a shutter that covers up some of the beam for low and pops out of the way for high.
2/ It is normal for the light cast to flicker very slightly. The light is well defined and has sharp edges, so it is easier to notice the tiny wobble of the lamp's element as you travel along a road surface (unless it is perfectly smooth). There is a description of a failing ballast further up this thread.
3/ If the shutter is stuck, then changing the lamp won't fix it.
4/ It seems odd to me that the shutter does go back when you switch the ignition off, this suggests that maybe the problem isn't the shutter but is in the wiring. However, if one is working and one isn't, the problem must be close to the lamp assemblies.
5/ There are two relays, both in the under hood relay center. The so called 'low' one (47) is on all the time the headlamps are lit, the high beam one (39) controls the shutters. Fuse 23 is right high, fuse 24 is left high. (Fuse 21 is left on/low and 19 right on/low).
These details are from my 2004 year model.

The only thing Tony and CC missed is that the top is covered under the GMPP warranty!!! Now don't tell them WHAT to do just tell them that it isn't working. It's up to them to figure out the "WHY".
PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW THE ISSUES ARE RESOLVED SO WE CAN KEEP OUR KNOWLEDGE BASE UP TO DATE.
Thanks
