Hi

My shop manual mentions rear fog lights for non-US cars. Are there members out there in Europe that have this on their cars? Do the lights mount outside near the license plate area? Are they inside behind that rear panel? Do any of the US owners have cars with this installed? I always thought a rear fog light was a good idea so as not to get rear-ended while driving in a dense fog situation.
I was wondering also if the US wiring loom included the provisions for this installation. Anyone out there with experience on this subject. :skep

My XLR service manual, a 3 volume set which I ordered from my GM dealer, shows the location of the rear fog lamps on page 13-25. According to the service manual, on page 4-217, "the rear fog lamp is illuminated by a LED and serviced as part of the back up lamp assembly". It looks like the LED is located in the lower third of the assembly. The service manual says nothing about whether the European back up assemblies are interchangeable with US back up lamps that don't have the fog lamps; although your local dealer may know.

hope this helps...

MTRocket is correct- the european rear fog lamps are an LED assembly located under the backup lamps. The Euro spec XLR has a number of different devices and doo-dads the US spec cars don't (and the wiring for the rear fog lamps is one of them).

Having said that, it might be neat to add the LED fog lamps to the rear, and simply wire them off the front fog lamps...... I think you've given me a project! :thumbs

I actually wonder if the European lamps are even available in the US. Anyway,
I tend to leave my front fog lights on all the time... hopefully the rears won't be so bright as to blind the drivers behind you. You could probably wire them into the back up lamps so they only come on in reverse... let me know how they work.

Good Catch!!!

It would be a very interesting project.

We'll have to do a "How To" on it to help the other interested members.

Reading through the shop manual, it seemed to me that the headlight stalk was different also to allow for turning on/off the rear fog light. It would be interesting to talk to someone that has this installed and find out how it works. I've seen newer Volvo's and BMW's with rear fog lights here in the NW and they were not overly bright, but brighter than normal tail lights. Seems like a good addition if the parts can be sourced here in the states. :jester

Everyone,

Here is a picture of the Eruopean XLR with the rear fog lamps. Just copy it to your brouser. You may also be able to click on it and see the picture

Interesting placement. I guess you would also have to buy the whole "license bucket" with the light holes already cut out unless you were real good with a dremel tool.

So now I guess we try to get a part number and see if GM will sell the part into the US. I think it would look good on our cars.:skep
