Dear members,
I just mentioned my experience with the engine light and check gas cap earlier in another post. I had the fuel cap replaced and the engine light reset at the dealership. However, the warning lights disappeared after this and then came on again. I just found out that someone who drove my car earlier had filled fuel while the engine was running. I've heard that filling the tank while the engine running could cause damage to one of the computers, as a result, the check gas cap message and engine light appears. Is that correct? Anyone had experienced this before? if so , any suggestions to solve the problem would be appreciated.
Thank you.

NOT CORRECT!!!!!!
There are NO WIRES that run from the fuel tank to the computer.
I have filled up with the car running, A/C on and my wife in the passenger side of the car many times.
I was hopeful that bob aka standby was correct in recommending the new gas cap but I still stand behind my origional post.
The dealer can diagnose the problem with his Diagnostic tool.
Good Luck

I appreciate your response XLR I FL.Indeed, filling the tank did not cause the issue . Fortunately this time, the code was sent as a result of a loose gas cap. After a new gas cap and few engine restarts, the code cleared itself!!!:cheers :party :cheers

Thought this was so everywhere...
In New Jersey it is illegal to fuel any motor vehicle while the engine is running.
And I think it is also a federal violation.
Not to start a war here, but it is very dangerous to fuel a car with the engine running. It is also quite a waste of fuel.
Jersey law on idling
7:27-15.8 Idle standard
(a) No person shall cause, suffer, allow, or permit the engine of a gasoline-fueled motor
vehicle to idle for more than three consecutive minutes if the vehicle is not in motion.
(b) The provisions of (a) above shall not apply to:
l. Auto buses while discharging or picking up passengers;
2. Motor vehicles stopped in a line of traffic;
3. Motor vehicles whose primary and/or secondary power source is utilized in
whole or in part for necessary and definitively prescribed mechanical
operation other than propulsion, passenger compartment heating or air
conditioning;
I would like to mention that there is an electric motor in the gas tank and a rheostat.
The motor is the fuel pump and the rheostat the fuel level.

There might be some "danger" there of allowing a car to sit and idle, as carbon monoxide could build up and kill you. But specific danger from filling the tank with gasoline??? I don't see how.

Ya know (that's an Alaskian saying) truth be told. I remember when that law was instituted in NJ when I lived there and it was mainly because people would stand there smoking a cigarette while pumping gas and the state was concerned about gas spillage and someone dropping a butt into the gas by accident.
Just because it's the law, doesn't make it right. Good old state law makers sit around doing nothing but making up stupid laws but don't attack the real problems facing their states.:bs
