Would anyone like to share their thoughts on engine modifications that resulted in improved gas mileage for their XLRs? Air intakes, exhaust systems, computer chips, dyno tuning, snake-oil-products? Anything that you have tried and you see an improvement. Opinions and actual results are welcome.

Thanks,
Jerry

Well you already know that the XLR or XLR-V aren't economy cars. So I will suggest you consider a K&N Air filter element to improve air flow and fuel burn.

Keeping the tires inflated to the correct pressure is a big help as is trying not to "Hot Rod" the car. Good Luck on that one.

Most all of the chips are for more horsepower and perfromance and not fuel conservation. I would not suggest letting anyone mess with the timing or running lower octane fuel in the car since it may cause engine damage and defeat your purpose.

I for one am quite pleased (amazed) with the fuel mileage considering the automobile. 80 MPH on the highway and I averaged 27.5 the first trip out and 24.5 the next. Better than my '01 Chrysler Sebring 6cyl!!!!

Hans from Germany and I got some pretty good gas mileage considering we drove to Albuquerque in my V usually between 90 and 125 with three bursts to 158 and averaged 21mph. Sheeeeeeeeeeee, don't tell the cops on I-40.

I would stay away from the K&N filters. Yes, they do provide for more air intake, however, if you do the math you'll discover that your engine is not cabable of sucking in more air that is already available through your OEM filters. K&N filters have a poor rating in terms of allowing small particles in to the intake system. By comparison, the best filter for your XLR is the AMSOIL filter. And, I am not a AMSOIL saleperson. I'm using OEM filters on my XLR. I get around 28MPG at 80MPH.
I put a new exhaust system on my XLR. The improvement was noticeable.

I very much agree with you about the AMSOIL air filter, & K&N's negative side, they can pull the but can't clean it that well. After all if they can use a AMSOIL air filter on the Abrams M1 Tank that good enough for my xlr. As far as the air intake, it needs much more in AND OUT ALSO.
Here's a bit of GOOD news for everyone that has a VOLANT AIR INTAKE, this summer they are going to replace the air filter with with a AMSOIL filter.
Im not a AMSOIL salesperson but I do think all there products are UNBEATABLE.

Mine is "out of the box" stock as far as intake and chip. I do have an aftermarket stainless exhaust system and (without testing) feel it makes no difference. I get 14/19 city and 24/27 hiway. I do get 28 MPG on the flat spots going 70 MPH with the A/C on. I'm in Arizona and my tests are in 100 degree weather (F) or higher. OEM sized tires. I am a 'smooth driver' and get good mileage in all vehicles I drive, but this car seems to get great mileage at hiway speeds (IMHO)
