Bought my 2004 certified XLR just under a year ago, decided to wait a while to upgrade my map DVD until a newer version came out, and just found out from the GM nav disc center that the 2004-2005 one free upgrade program on XLRs was suspended in April 2008. They said they had notified dealers who, in turn, should have notified the owners. My dealer did not contact me. Just thought I'd pass along the info.

You should have received the latest upgrade from your dealer as part of the Cerification Program. I would go over and at least try.

Funny you should mention the upgrade, I received my notification in the mail yesterday to call and set up delivery of the latest DVD.

No .... not turn-by-turn from OnStar.

I was amazed when I bought my white 08 to find Onstar will down load turn be turn. Has anyone used it... It seems ridiculous in light of the onboard nav system. (Admittedly GM is quite dated in this area compared to say, Lexus) I love the car but I cannot read the display with my polarized glasses and neither can I read the headsup display.

Instead of punching in a destination OnStar will download directions. Seems like a better way to me.

Too bad about the visuals blanking out with the use of polarized lenses though.

Just came from the eye doc and ordered new sunglasses and made sure they didn't put in those polarized lenses.

One of the huge benefits of Turn by Turn (on most 07 & later XLRs) is that works while driving! You simply press the button, talk to an advisor, they find the destination and download it into your vehicle. You receive audible and visual updates (DIC).

Keep in mind, since the ultimate destination is coming from a live advisor, the data base of info is much more up to date than even the current nav disc. But a combination of both gives you the best of all worlds.

After several weeks and a lot of "no," my sales manager ordered the 2008 version for me, should be here Wednesday. Once again, the information I received on this forum led to the ultimate positive response from my dealer.

I have turn by turn on my o6 xlr and my 07 srx, it does come in handy while driving when you only know the name of the location or don't wish to stop and put the car in park to try and locate it with the nav. system. Bill (ocool)

I guess we have twins, 06 XLR & 07 SRX, except I do not subscribe to Onstar anymore. After several bad experience, sending me 80 miles out of my way to get back to Apopka, not getting hotel reservations made for me on several trips and $500.00 per year per car when I can only drive one at a time I felt the Navigation system works better and gets me where I want to go with no mistakes. At least XM Radio only charges full price for one car and half price for the second car. Get smart Onstar and give deals like XM does. Robert (First Robin)

:iagree Robert, even the upgraded discs are out of whack; 200.00 for a .25 disc that they copy multiple times to send out. Oh I forgot they have to put a fancy label on it--that explains the price:glol :glol :glol

They got me hook, line and sinker--signed up for onstar and have never used it. I'm sure my minutes are gone, don't see the need to talk to anyone with the top down:lol :lol

Yeah .... that just happened to me with my 100 OnStar minutes .... went to use the phone (because now in CA it is illegal to use your cell while driving) and the wonderful recording comes on and tells me that I don't have any available minutes :cry :cry That just doesn't seem right that they can take the minutes away even when you re-up.

Someone already has raised cane about that with OnStar and they gave him back his minutes. Give it a try you all. I lost 10 minutes, no big deal. I still use my cell phone while driving in So Cal. When they pass a law that stops us from using a phone while driving when someone hits a kid on a bike and then gives him a ticket for using his phone to call in the license number that's when I draw the line...............and...........people can text while driving? Bull hockey

My husband just traded in my STS for a 2005 XLR (I adore that man!). It has version 4 navigation DVD in the car.
If I am understanding the above, should the dealer have given me the latest, greatest upgraded version as part of my certified purchase? BTW, what is the latest version that will work in an 05?

Sorry if yall have already gone over this info. This is my first post and I did search!
Thanks,
Pam

Dallasdoll:

I would go or call your dealer and ask the salesman you had to ge it for you.

Yes as far as I know you are still entitled to 1 free current NAV Disk as a result of the Certification.

I had to have the dealer fax them a copy of the sales invoice and then they sent me a new NAV Disk.

If not the dealer sholuld be willing to get you one at his cost and absorb the cost.

If that fails I haven't looked lately but I understand that disks can be found on the Internet for reasonable prices. I am not sure but the latest release number is 6 or 7 so be careful and don't buy one any older than that.

ALSO, please confirm this with oyur dealer but the XLR NAV disk is different form the Escalade and the other cars. So please just be careful.

The Cadillac Certified program for all owners was discontinued on 6/17/08. If your XLR or any Cadillac that had a factory installed Nav system was Cadillac Certified and purchased after 6/17/08 the courtesy one disc free upgrade was discontinued.

The program was designed that if the dealer sold you a (Freshly, not previously certified) certified Cadillac that had a Navigation system within 60 days of you taking delivery, you would have received the navdisc in the mail.

I have included the bulletin below that describes the discontinuation notice.

Navigation Disc program update
6/17/08

The purpose of this bulletin is to inform Cadillac Pre-Owned dealers and dealership personnel of a change to the GM Navigation Disc Update Program. The program previously included one free DVD map update for customers who purchased a Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned vehicle with a factory navigation system shortly after taking delivery.

Effective immediately, the program has been modified and a free DVD map update is no longer included for purchasers of Cadillac Certified Pre-owned vehicles. This message cancels and supercedes those sections of Message # VSS20060739 dated March 9, 2006 which address Cadillac Certified Pre-owned vehicles. This does not affect the original DVD map disc which is provided with the new vehicle. This also does not affect the owners of 2006 and 2007 model year vehicles with factory in-vehicle navigation. Those owners may still be eligible to obtain a free update or updates.

DVD map updates will continue to be offered by the GM Nav Disc Center. The data on the DVD map disc ages at a rate of 15-20% per year. As the data ages, the functionality of the navigation system declines. The DVD map updates are available annually at the beginning of the new model year. The updates are currently priced at $199 + shipping.

The GM Nav Disc Center can be contacted for both disc orders or for assistance with nav system operation. Order discs via the website, www.gmnavdisc.com, or by phone, 1-877-NAV-DISC (1-877-628-3472). Contact information for the Center is also included in the Navigation Owner's Manual Supplement (in the glovebox) and on the face of the DVD disc included with the new vehicle.

Given the general incompetence of the nav in my 2004, I'll put what I'd spend for an update disk into buying a Garmin. I can't believe a car this expensive can't tell me about upcoming rest areas until I'm able to see the "rest area 2 miles" signs.

REAL GOOD CATCH!!!!

Until you mentoned it I didn't realize that a new Garmin was actually less expensive than buying an upgrade disk from GM. What a HOOT!!!

I was also very pleasently surprised at the Blackberry GPS system that a friend showed me this week.

Technology is still getting better and better while becoming less expensive.

I think the technology used for built-in navigation systems is very obsolete. Navigation systems must be able to update themselves frequently and buying a DVD is certainly not a good method. I have a $200 TomTom and it has an updated map of my 4 year old neighborhood. My 2008 XLR navigation systems shows absolutely nothing.

So now, my iPhone and my TomTom are my best hi-tech friends.

Ditto SilverX, and it seems that it would be easy for the auto companies to contract with TomTom or Garmin for these systems with all the upgradable features they incorporate. I am experiencing a similar situation and am impressed by how easy it is to hook a TomTom up to the internet for real-time upgrades, including gas prices and adding your own map corrections.

The Only Problem I Have Had With The Garmon Is To Upgrade Even 6 Months After My Purchase They Wanted An Addition $180 ! You Could Buy Another Unit For That Money!
I Just Wish There Was A Economical Way To Make My 04 Nav Current! I Have An 06 Disc And It Still Misses Roads Just A Few Years Old. There Must Be Some Way To Upgrade For Less Than A New Garmon! Maybe Ill Just Over Ride It And Watch Movies As I Drive! Lol Jim F

GM P/N for version 5 (from '06 XLR) - 15798916
GM P/N for version 8 (newest upgrade with 2 discs) - 25979939U - I assume this is the same as what is in an '09.
