Okay, from what I'm reading, as a new member I have to post here, so here goes. I'm a new member from the Los Angeles area. Former top fuel dragster mechanic (early 1970's) and former cop (mid to late 1970's), now a Television Network Supervisor (safer and better paying job), all around nice guy, single, looking for his other half (okay, too much information). <G>

Just found the site and am coming aboard.
Own '06 Starblack #245 w/12,000 mi.
Run into issue w/small window hanging as I read in an old post on the forum.
Dealer saying now top is mis alinged and after 2 weeks can't seem to get it fixed. Warranty being denied due to "unexplainable" cause of problem.
Any like situations?
Top really worked fine, except the right small window hung on head restraint once in a while.
Thanks for the efforts of all to keep the site going.

Where are you located??? The issue you have is ....I think related to to the top software and the switches. A XLR qualified technician will be able to correct the problem fairly easily.

As far as the warranty is concerned the issue is well known as is covered by your factory warranty.

Call your dealers General Manager and if you aren't happy with their support call Cadillac Customer Service and get somebody who is interested in helping you resolve the issue.

Is there another dealer close to you that you would consider using???

Thanks for the welcome!
I am in Lubbock, Tx, home of Texas Tech and Buddy Holly!
Seems they think it is a main bracket that is bent and had to special order it.
I talked w/customer service and they said this type problem has nver occured and seems to be due to puting top up in the wind or some other stress caused event.
Strange!
I appealed it to supervisor and received assurance that if another case comes up they would contact me about coverage. I do not expect a call.
The cost of the bracket ($475) and installation was $1K.
The Zone manager was in to visit, but made no suggestions or indication of coverage.
At any rate, all is working fine now and am enjoying ride.

DEEDO1942:

You will need to escalate this issue.

The top realignment is a known problem as is the wing window not being aligned. Please read the postings in the top area.

If this is the dealer you bought the car from they should be willing to help you out.

See if the head of Cadillac Customer Service will talk with you about a resolution.

I have personally owned a 1983 Coupe DeVille and currently own a 1994 Fleetwood Brougham. My father got me hooked on Cadillacs. He owned a 1978 Fleetwood D'Elegance and a 1982 ElDorado. I am currently looking at adding an XLR to my stable, just because they are gorgeous, and I want one. Lol. Hi everyone,

I just joined this forum to learn more about buying a XLR sometime in the future. I have a 1990 Allante and really enjoy driving (and working on) it. I also have a 2005 STS which is the wife's car. I would like to add a XLR to the stable, but I am going to have to find out about one of those lifts so I can fit three cars in a two car garage!

Welcome to the XLR Forum. You aren't the only Allante owner here. So you will have several reasons to visit the site often.

There is a lot of information on the various XLR years from 2004 up to the 2009 models which are the last.

If you need any additional insite please don't hesitate to ask.

Howdy, I've been reading your forum for a month or so. I purchased a 2004 XLR in Feb 2009 that was origionally built/shipped to dealer in late 2003 so It appears mine was one of the first ones off the line!

Now has 21,600 miles and appears to be in excellent condition. I have all the Cadillac maintenance records, etc.

Very impressive machine!

Welcome to the Forum!!

What is the color of your car?? Black was the first color produced.

Do you happen to know the serial number of your car?? It will help to determine when your car was produced. there is another way however the Cadillac site will be able to show you your Build Sheet.

Hi everyone! New member and XLR owner. I purchased a Crimson Pearl 2005 model a few weeks prior to this post.

I did quite a bit of research before making the purchase, and many of my questions were answered by existing topics on this forum. I wanted to thank everyone for sharing their experiences and knowledge of these awesome machines. Hopefully as I continue to learn my way around the XLR, I will be able to help someone else in the future as you have for me. Thanks again!

XLR is Black.... I don't have a built sheet (costs $50 from GM) or the serial number.

The GM Vehicle Inquiry System report shows "Pre-Delivery Inspection date is 09/24/2003". Not sure when it rolled off the line, but the dealer received it early Oct 2003.

Note - You can get this report free from a Cadillac dealer by going to the parts department and giving them the VIN number and politely asking them for the GM Vehicle Inquire System Report. This report is on their national computer so the XLR did not have to be purchased there. Report also shows any work done by Cadillac on the XLR and the pre-delivery inspection date. Nice!!

It would be interesting to see what the earliest Pre-Delivery Inspection date is for owners on the forum.

Hello, My name is George, and I just brought the 2008 (Demo) Xenon XLR home last week. I have wanted this BLUE car for a number of years, and now it's a reality. Just now learning about all the buttons and functions within the ****pit controls. "I'm actually reading the manual". Former GM Delco Moraine Proving Grounds test engineer, and long time Cadillac owner. Currently driving, this XLR, a 2005 ESV (original owner), a 1995 Suburban (oo), 1979 crew cab dually (oo), a 1976 C20 (oo), a 1972 Vette (oo), and a 1955 Pontiac (project car found in the desert, not running) Did I mention we like GM products? HA HA! I do have a TECH question on rear end 'sounds'. Thank you.

George:

Welcome to the XLR Forum!!

I think you will find that we have a great group here along with lots of very valuable information about the car.

XENON BLUE: thats the color of my 2004. I really like it and find that it is very unique. Your car of course will be more so since that was the last year that it was offered.

REAR END SOUNDS: I just responded to another member about this issue. Being an engineer and an owner of Corvettes your are more than likely already familiar with the reolution...in most instances. The dealer will need to change the fluid and put in the corvette positraction additive. It may take a couple of changes but it will go away. The latest thinking by some uses the Mobil 1 Positraction fluid and the GM additive.

It will be a warranty item so there's no charge to you.

Good luck and please let us know how it works out for you.

AzGeo
03-23-2009, 11:20 PM
Thanks, I figured it was 'fluid breakdown', since the whale oil based posi traction fluid was outlawed, it's been a case of "trail and error" as far as lubricating the clutch packs. On the 1972 Vette the GM additive seems to have a short life, but Red Line oils and additive seem to perform very well, SO FAR. Thank you for the info!

YOUR QUESTION: In my assessment I would pass since there are many other XLR's in the market with less mileage on them as fairly good deals.

Of course in the end it is your decision.

Then again... 87K is nothing in miles for the Northstar.
But, as XLR I says, there are other deals to be had, but for more $.

Hello All, I just bought a 04 XLR in Feb 09. I love it but have had one minor problem.Sometime when I park it, it don't lock into PARK all the way and the door won't open, or the engine won't start. Sometimes I have to move the shifter out of PARK and back again or sometimes I turn the steering wheel to get it to start or get the door to open. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Could it be a linkage adjustment or a sensor problem? Thanks in advance for your help. Griff

XLR I FL
04-03-2009, 01:16 PM
Griff:

I haven't heard of this problem before.

My guess is that the reason for the other problems are that the car does lock itself when it thinks it is in gear. So your primary issue is resolving the PARK or NO PARK issue.

Take it to the dealer and see what they need to do to be sure it is properly adjusted.

Well out here in the Arizona desert, we don't stock parts for "those exotic cars" and so I am waiting on the trans filter/gasket kit and the special fluid and additives for the rear end. Has anyone used RED LINE fluids in their rear ends/trans ??? GM says they like Mobil one gear oil with the additive. I use Red Line oils in my race V-drive boats and my play boats too. I won't brag about money, I'll just say that I love this car and I want to do whats right! Did I mention that I still have my 1976 and 1979 Chevy Pick Up trucks? I also still have my original 1972 Vette, I really love GM products! Can you tell?

XLR I FL
04-06-2009, 11:14 AM
AzGeo:

Yea GM/Cadillac is really into the Mobil 1 products--oil and now the transmission/rearend fluids.

I just got back from the dealer with the rear end noise and they used Mobil 1 Posi-traction fluid this time.

So we'll see. It does seem to be quieter now but that is because the fluid is new.

Hello. Recently purchased a Xenon Blue 2004 XLR with 12,500 miles. We have put on about 1,000 miles and absolutely enjoy driving the car whenever the weather is good.

Shortly after the purchase, interesting issues started popping up such as water on the garage floor, the trunk lid would not close, and the temp jumped from about 190 to 220. Took it to the Caddy dealer and they found a bad fan sensor, a leaky radiator, a leaking water pump, bad sensor on the trunk, and the emergency key cylinder is bad, so the key will not work.

Fortunately, we purchased a bumper to bumper and so far the bulk of the costs have been covered. It was in the shop for about 10 days the past two weeks and I took it back today for a few more days of repair. They have to pull the rear facia to replace the emergency key cylinder.

Compared to our older Corvettes and an STS, the XLR is a hoot to drive, very responsive, comfortable, and really nice looking. We just hope it stays out of the shop long enough in the future that we can enjoy it.

Welcome to the XLR Forum.

I think you will find that there a lots of very knowledgeable and XLR experienced members here. So if you don't see what you are looking for just ask and you will end up with your answer.

YOUR PROBLEMS--Well you inherited almost all of the problems that popped up on the 2004's over time and led to improved parts for the follow on years.

I owned one of the first 2004's Xenon Blue and now have a 2008 Black "V".

The replacement radiators are now "V" radiators the water pump is a heavier "V" model as well I was told.

Please read thoorugh the technical area to see what else you may need to look into.

Burnt running lights, brake lines rubbing, rear end clunking (positraction plates sticking) You are more than familiar with that being a Corvette owner. Mobil 1 Rear end fluid fixes that and yes it is under warranty.

Also be sure to check and see how long your battery has been in the car.

I know you will enjoy the car but it will need your maticulous care at first to get it up to snuff as far as the various issues go.

It is recommended that you don't get into the habit of putting the top up or down without the motor running. The process draws a lot of power.

When it is all said and done I know you will really enjoy the car.

Welcome to the XLR Forum.

BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE DEAL--Be sure tha the car is Cadillac Certified or has a GMPP Warranty on it.

If you read some of the recent posts here you will see that the investment in the warranty is well worth the money.

Just signed up. Love these forums. I am not an XLR owner yet. Looking to trade in my 2000 corvette for one. I am a big poster of the corvette forum.

Found a few '04-'05's in the 28k-32k range. That sounds like a fairly good deal. They are in the 30-50k mile range.
Any quirks in those two year groups? I'm edging towards an 05 mostly because of the usual first-year problems (just like the 97 C5 corvettes).

I have found a few that are certified at dealers with the 6 yr/100k warrantee. I am leaning towards them as well...I think that alone would be worth a couple extra $1000. Any thoughts or tips most welcome!!

Thanks a bunch,
dean

Welcome to the XLR Forum!!

You are on the right track. Be sure to get a car with a warranty Cadillac Certified or GMPP. The price range you are in is reasonable for a "Excellent Condition" car with low mileage.

Please remember to carefully check the brakes, rotors and tires. Replacement of these items at the approximate mileage you are looking at is about $2k to $2.5K.

Also good Carfax and a GM/Cadillac Service history reports are manditory.

GOOD HUNTING!!!!

One question, is there a copy of the user's manual online? or where would be the best place to get one? ebay? There are a few minor things about the car that i haven't figured out yet.

The responses so far seem to fall into the categories of "sweet ride!", "that's a cadillac?", and "looks like the batmobile". :)

From the selling dealer. They should be more than pleased to get you one.

There is a 2007 Owners manual on line in the Technical Section if it is more convenient.

I just bought a 2005 XLR that is black. I looked on both doors, glove compartment, under the hood, in the trunk and haven't found a sticker showing the exterior color code number to buy touch up paint. I have a photo copy of the owners manual which doesn't contain it. Can someone tell me where to find it on the car ? Thanks in advance for your help.

all! Hogster here. New to the forums and while I don't actually own an XLR, I have worked on plenty of them. I'm a Cadillac master technician (electrical and engine repair... still working on the others) with XLR training. I was turned on to this site by a customer having problems with his folding top. He printed off a couple of threads to "help" me in my diagnosis. I didn't take offense. LOL.
I was pleasantly surprised to see several owners were familiar with not only the cars, but with the protocol for GM service issues.

I joined because I've recently inherited a Northstar 4.6 with a broken block (the boss where the idler pulley retaining bolt goes has broken) and I think I can have it repaired. I'd like to install it into a project vehicle I've had since I started driving. It's an old Nissan truck. I was hoping someone here could direct me to a place where I could have a PCM custom programmed to eliminate any codes that might set as a result of being a stand alone unit. I don't have a transmission yet and of course, I won't be using any of the other modules from the XLR and still want the engine to perform at it's peak. Any hints on where to start?

Welcome to the XLR Forum.

The supercharged badge is glued on via a 3m adhesive that is part of the emblem. If you are trying to take it off use a hair dryer and your finger nail to gently lift it on one corner.

Then warm it up a little as you lift it off of the door panel.

Please be sure you know where your current warranty status is. If you have time remaining on the original warranty please buy the GMPP warranty as soon as you can. It's the only warranty that covers the top and all of its mechanicals and electronics.

Just joined this group and this is my first posting.
Although I do not yet have an XLR I am verfy seriously considering getting one.
Last summer I sold my '85 Corvette and I just turned in an 05 CTS V which had just 17,000 kilometers. Swapped it on a Cadillac SRX for my wife. She loves the SRX and didn't "appreciate" the CTS. Too much power and of course it was a 6 speed.
I'll be reading with considerable interest the posting on XLR's in an effort to research the car's quirks and problem areas so \i will know what to look for when shopping.

Q - Is there a really good site that lists XLR's for sale? I've beeon on auto123.com and it's not bad.

Welcome to the XLR Forum.

Please read the posts here regarding evaluating and buying new XLR's adn XLR-V's (The one I'll bet you will really want).

Then you can check Ebay and Autotrader and get a sense of the pricing, features and color you will want.

Regarding years to consider--If you are concerned about warranty you should confine your search to 2006 and up IF hey still have the original factory warranty. That way you can purchase the GMPP warranty and cover the car for up to 7 years inclding the top it's electronics and mechanicals.

please ask if you have any more questions or don't see what you are looking for. We have the absolute best and most experienced members who are more than willing to share their experiences and recommendations.

Just got my XLR the other day and I love it. I got a 2005 XLR with lots of miles and I hope to put lots more on this fine machine. Had an issue with the top right off the bat but that turned out to be a sensor and now that is fixed. I got one transmitter and one key with this used car. I have since purchased another transmitter and have that programmed. I could not program that myself for some reason and had a dealer do that for me using the Tach 2. Now here is a question for you if I can post it here. The key I recieved is just a plain key without a chip. I went to get an extra one cut at the hardware store and they said it called for a chip key? What does this car take? I also tried to use the key in the rear bumper lock to manually raise the trunk and it would go in and turn but not release the trunk. What am I doing wrong there? Anyway just wanted to say hello and this is a great site. I am a Southern Indiana boy and hope to get to some of the get togethers you guys have and meet with some of you some day.

Welcome.

The key is only for entrance into the car via the lock in the rear bumper in the event you have a power failure.

My suggestion is to take the straw nozzle provided with a can of WD-40 and insert it into the lock and spray liberally. Then take the key and insert it and remove it several times to work the WD-40 into the lock tumblers. Try to turn the key to the right carefully. Sooner or later it should turn for you. When it does spray some more lube in it and turn it several times to loosen it up.

Programming the key FOB should be able tobe downby placing the FOB in the pocket inside the glove box.

I am guessing you didn't receivea owners manual with the car either right??

I'm happy to be a part of the XLR forum. I recently purchased a 2006 XLR with SUPER low mileage. (2400) The previous owner put some bucks into the car by adding 22" 3 piece Vellano rims, an awesome Strut Grille and Flowmaster Exhaust. The car runs great. A real head-turner.... I already added a cool wind-retrictor, Volant cold air-intake and a carbon fiber dash kit for the interior. Great upgrades. I'm looking forward to reading what people have to say about their cars. marty:

Wecome to the XLR Forum. There is an extensive knowledge database on all of the issues reported by our members including the resolutions.

But, I have never heard of your particular problem with the top temperature sensor.

I am going to suggest a possible solution for you:

1. Write down all of your radio settings.

2. Disconnect the battery negative cable for about 5 minutes and then reconnect it.

3. Reindex your windows--push the "DOWN" button and allow the window to go all the way into the door and hold the button for 5 seconds. Push the "UP" side of the button and allow the window to go to the up position until it stops and hold it for 5 seconds. Repeat for the passenger door window.

4. Start the car and leave it running. Then try and operate the top. Hopefully the message will not reappear. If it does you may need access to a TechII at the dealer to get the code removed and/or the sensor replaced.

Please post the resolution here.

Jerry

Marty,

The "Top Too Cold To Move" error message is displayed when the thermister (temperature sensor) on the Folding Top pump indicates the pump is not within the correct operating temperature range. This is the first report I've seen of this message.

If --after performing a system reset (as Jerry suggested) the message doesn't clear, you need to take it to a dealership to have a diagnostic test run on the pump. The thermister is integral to the pump, so I doubt it's repairable. Hopefully, you won't have to have the pump replaced --they aren't cheap; about $1600 before labor when mine was replaced. If you need to replace it, can buy a new pump fom GMPD and save enough to pay for the labor.

Once you get this figured out, post a new message in the Technical section under "Top" titled something like, " Bad Pump Temp Sensor" so we can add it to the database.

Thanks,
CC

My husband and I just bought an '06 and love it. I have already read and answered many questions I've had through this forum. Thanks for the great information.
Here are a few questions I still have:
I can't get the seat positions to lock into memory. I will use key fob #1 and get everything where I want it and hold the number 1 until it beeps twice and my husband will do the same with key fob #2, but when we get back in the seats don't go to the memory positions.

Secondly, there seems what appears to be a piece of insulation, foam, or something peeking up between the dashboard and the windshield. What is it and would it be o.k. for me to just push it down?

Thanks!

I have been viewing the site since I bought my 06 XLR-V (black with tan interior) in April 09. Thanks to a broken leg she has been sitting in the garage for 2 months now and it looks like I wont be driving my V again until next summer. I thought I was going to drive a lot this year since last year I only drove her 5k miles (summer only) This year I didn't even get the chance to put 2k on the odometer. I was starting to feel a little down and was already thinking about selling my beauty when my Insurance premium arrived. It is hard for me to find the motivation to keep a car I can't drive and then have to pay so much in insurance for it. Between the GMMP that I added 2 weeks before I broke my leg and the insurance premium, I am looking at almost 5k this year for a car I can't use. I knew it was time for me to reach out to other XLR lovers and either get a pep talk or some good advise so I can get through this dilema. Do I tough it out and hang in there for hopes of a better summer next year? Can I still get good money for my V if I want to sell? 2 months in the house and I am going crazy so any input would help.

First thing is WELCOME to the XLR Forum as a member!!!

Second I am sure I speak for all of your brother members here when I say we are sorry for your injury.

I would go crazy too if I couldn't drive my "V".

However here are some options to ponder;
1. You can get a close friend to drive you around top up or top down.
2. There is plenty of time to ponder what else you want to do to make the car more personal.
3. Preplan some trips that you will want to take when you are ready to go.
4. What else needs to be done to keep the maintenance up to date. I am sure the dealer would pick the car up and redeliver it for you.
5. Please be sure to get a Battery Tender and plug it in so your battery is always at a full charge and the car is ready to go.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery

Thanks for the warm words. I already have a battery tender but the thought of winterizing my V already brings me down. I just bit the bullet and paid the insurance so I will follow your advise and plan a nice road trip for late October. I cant wait!

Welcome Scott!

As for your high insurance premium while storing your car, I can offer a suggestion: Explain your situation to your insurance company to find out if they offer (inactive) storage insurance. There's no reason to pay exhorbitantly high premiums for an idle vehicle.

My insurance company (USAA) does this for me and I pay about $15 a month when I'm not driving my XLR. Basically, it's insured for fire/theft which is all I need. When I want to drive it, I need only make a phone call to add full coverage, unplug the Battery Tender, and start cruising.

CC :cheers

That is great advise unfortunatley what works for most States is always an exception in New Jersey. It looks like I would have to turn my plates in and re-register every year as the law in NJ is that all registered vehicles must have Liabilty Coverage. The best I could do is drop Collision for the winter and save around $250. At this point I will probably just keep the full policy in effect just in case I get a few odd nice winter days and get the urge to drive my car.

Thanks for the advise and I appreciate the help.

Sorry to hear that Scott.

Vehicle registration in this part of CA seems to have become optional to many drivers. In a five mile stop-and-go traffic spree last night, I counted 27 cars with expired tabs. Both of my next-door neighbor's cars have been unregistered for over six months! I mentioned it to a guy at work today and he laughed and said he had scraped his motorhome registration off two years ago! I'm always amazed to see vehicles here that don't have any plates driving around. Where I'm from in WA, that passes the stupid test.

CA could recoup a nice portion of it's deficit by cruising parking lots and clubbing cars with (grossly) expired tags, and pulling over the rest when they see them. Apparently the crime rate here precludes that.

Rant complete. I feel better now.

Hi "XLR I FL"! I have been reading comments on here for some time and must say there is some good information. I bought a used 05 XLR and loved it so much that when production stopped, knew I had to have the latest. I bought my new red 09 about 6 months ago and love it!
Last weekend while in Savannah GA., found a note from "JayInAtlanta" on my car. Its always a pleasure to get nice comments!

Today I made the big jump and traded my 93 Allante in on a 2007 XLR.
It is Silver with Black interior. The dealership had just received it in from a GM auction where it had been a GM leased unit. I will pick up tomorrow.

Welcome to the XLR Forum!!

A couple of items for you to be sure you do BEFORE you pick it up.

1. Buy the GMPP extended warranty for as along a period as you can. It is the only warranty that covers the top and allof the parts and labor. You can only buy it if your are still covered by the original factory warranty -mileage and time period and before you are within 2 months of it expiring.

2. the dealer to be sure all of the cars software is up to date especially the top operation software.

3. Be sure all factory bullitins and campaigns have been addressed.

Hello, I'm a new member from Ohio. I like unique cars so I took the plunge and bought a 2004 XLR. I also have a couple of other unique cars. I built a replica kit of a 1962 Austin Healy 3000 and a replica (not from a kit) of a 1964 Cheetah. I guess that makes me a small time car collector. I really like the XLR as I do my other cars. I don't have the V, but like the V grille and would like to replace the grille on mine with a V grille. I've seen aftermarket mesh V grilles on the internet but they have the small center mesh grille for the lower grille. Does anybody know if a larger lower mesh grille that goes all the way across is available and the source? Thanks

XLR I FL
02-25-2011, 12:57 PM
You have a standard XLR with a cruise control that has the distance separator. so a metal grill in some cases caused the unit to malfunction since the sensor is behind the plastic panels.

XLR-V's don't have the cruise distance feature and can use the longer lower grill.

As a new owner of an XLR V, I was hoping to find an informative site pertaining to this car. Your site seems exactly what I was looking for. I will probably not post often, but I will read just about everything. This is the first sports car I have own since back in the late 60's and I have really enjoyed the 1st week of driving it. Please feel free to contact me and I look forward to reading the threads and checking out what everyone has to offer about this car.

Hi folks!

New 2006 XLR owner. About to turn 37,000 miles and a beautiful Infrared :) Just wanted to say hi and exclaim how excited I am to finally have one of these cars. Already in love and it hasn't even been a week!!!

Quick question or two if I may...

Are any of you on the other XLR forum also?

This one looked like it had more activity :P

Any suggestions on things I should know about the car? Anything I wouldn't know to ask?:confused

Any tips or suggestions on type of waxes, leather conditioners, surface cleaners to make her shine? She's gonna get a little beat up in the Florida summer here :/

Thanks all! Looking forward to this community!

Welcome to the XLR Forum.

Sorry to learn you are having some issues with your XLR.

Here's some initial diagnostic suggestions.

RADIO--Read up on the radio tuning and setup to see if they got turned down.

If the settings are correct then you will need to see if any current is flowing to them. A voltage tester is in order here. see if the speakers actually are plugged in to the radio. it is possible that the connection was loosened.

HORN--More than likely a loose connection.

I am new to the forum also, and think I need to post here first. I purchased a 2004 XLR 7 years ago (satin nickel). It has moved to San Diego with me and is quite happy to be in the sunshine most of the time vs. the winters in Kansas City when it's Escalade garage-mate got most of the workout. Since I have the top down frequently here, two questions: 1) can anyone recommend something to put behind the seats to minimize the wind? 2) Is there anyway to make the XM radio operable without drilling a hole in the trunk deck to install the XM knob?

Welcome to the XLR Forum!!

Wind Noise--I would recommend you contact the folks at Windrestrictor as a registered vendor here. They have a very good track record with the members here.

2004 XM Radio Install--Please go to the Technical Section and under the Radio topic there are several posts there regarding XM installs.

I agree that the XM HUMP is very ugly and not worth installing.

Hello,

I am very happy to say that at I am recent owner of a 2005 Cadillac XLR. Although this car has more than 220,000 miles, this dealer maintained car looks like it has no more than a tenth of this mileage. The car has been dealer maintained throughout its life. The local dealer also gave it a clean bill of health so I am hoping for the best.
I do want to say thank you to this forum and its members as the information here was most useful. I wanted to upgrade the 2005 key fobs to the newer rectangular version (with the integrated hard key that detaches from the fob). I took an existing from fob from my STS and reprogrammed the XLR from scratch.
After programming the fob, unfortunately the trunk would not open. Thank goodness for this forum. I was able to look on the forum and found that the valet switch could be the problem. Sure enough, I must have activated it when I was programming the fobs! Now everything works. I even bought some Saturn keys and filed them down so that they would fit in the fob. With the exception of the horn and the “remote start”, everything works. These two issues don’t bother me as the buttons were not ever part of the original fob.
I have a couple of questions. Forgive me if they are already here on the forum.
1) Is there a way to remove the GPS restriction that will allow you to enter data while moving?
2) How do you hook up an ipod/iphone/ipad to the stereo system? Is something that I can do myself?
3) Given my car’s mileage, what would be some of the things that you would be concerned about? More specifically, what are things that I might want to have checked more regularly?
Many thanks for all the help. I look forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully,
George

George:

Welcome to the XLR Forum!!

We are pleased rhat you have enjoyed cruising the site and now have elected to join up.

To answer your questions:

1. There never was a remote start included on the XLR from the factory from 2004-2009.
2. The NAV system used to have a service code that would allow access. But if your XLR was in the dealer They more than likely updated the code and disabled it.

3. iPad hook up-Please look in the technical section under Radio NAV for lots of information and experiences. Use the Search function to turn up all rhat there is.

4. You are in a elete group. There is another member here that has a high mileage XLR. We all are going to learn from you both.

However, having said that, my guess is gaskets, head, water pump, oil pan, tranny, rear end--etc. Beside the gaskets we are talking brakes, rotors, hoses, battery.

My guess is the frequent fluid changes have contributed to very little internal parts wear in the engine, transmission and rear end.

You are going to be a great source of data an information. So I am hoping you will post often.

Very best wishes

Jerry

:cheersWhat is the problem when a Cadillac De ville drops low in the back?
In my experience, the air ride system has failed.

Hopefully the car can be re levelled by a simple adjustment. If not then you may need new air bags in the rear.

Welcome to the XLR FORUM!!

To answer your questions:

OIL--Capacities. You may still be 2 quarts low. Check the dip stick when the car is cold and on level ground.

Engine oil (qts / liters):
10 / 9.5 5W30 Mobil 1

SWAY BAR--The standard XLR's didn't come with one. It was introduced in 2006 on the XLR-V. It can be added fairly easily. Many members have done it at home.

It's right above my reply--number 172 in the right upper corner.

Be sure to use your oil dip stick as your guide for your oil level.

I pulled the info from a 2004 XLR spec sheet but........

Welcome!!

I just purchased a Xenon 2006 XLR with 25,000 miles.
Car is now located in Cleveland, Ohio.
Car has never seen snow and will sit in a heated garage during the winter.
Everytime I watch the top go up and down, and all the moving parts, makes me glad that I have the exteneded warranty!

I'm inheriting a 2005 Cadillac XLR in the next few weeks, and have been reading through the forums trying to prepare myself for the car. I'm very excited, as I'm currently driving a 2008 Civic Hybrid. I can't wait to have power again! I'm a 23 year old guy, which I know is not the normal age for an XLR. However, I'll take good care of it :) Looking forward to getting to know the XLR and sharing with you guys. Thanks.

What's happening all? I am a retired Soldier from Detroit Michigan and I just purchased a black 2008 xlr recently. I have to say that I love it! I look forward to the opportunity to become more involved with the site.

Welcome!!

You will really enjoy your XLR and will find that the forum is a greatplace to ask and receive answers to questions you may have about the car.

IMPORTANT--Please check the original "In Service Date" for your 2008. If you are more than 2 months away from the 4 year warranty expiration, I strongly suggest you obtain a GMPP Warranty for the car right away. That way your XLR will have virtually all of the major components protected.

I *may* be another XLR owner in the near future.... Right now, I own a low mileage 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe (3.8 V6) as my "fun/project car". I bought it, new, in March of '09 when they first appeared on the dealer lots.

I sunk a lot of money in it in the last couple years, but to be perfectly honest, I'm just not as happy with it as I thought I would be. The Genesis Coupe community feels like it's going quickly downhill as more "young punks" get the cars and seem to enjoy insulting everyone else's custom work, talking trash whenever possible, etc. I like to think I'm still not "over the hill" yet, and I like sports cars -- but I also realize I turned 40 earlier this year and have a family with kids too. I'm just not feeling one with the community of people driving the car around, and that's NOT what you want from a car that's not just a "daily driver". (I've got a Jeep Patriot for that.)

I was giving some thought to finding a clean, used Cadillac CTS 2-door coupe after I ran across a couple earlier in the year that were actually in my price range. But now that the year end is approaching and it seems like a good time to buy, I can't find a single one on dealer lots.

What I did stumble onto was a 2005 black XLR, which I had completely forgotten even existed until I saw it. (I remember it being a big deal when it first came out, for the hard-top the convertible had - but never heard much about it ever since.) I did some more research and now I'm kinda hooked on the thing!

I'm *so* close to visiting the dealer out in St. Peters, MO and seeing what kind of trade-in deal we can work out.... BUT, would love to get people's opinions on this here too. I mean, frankly, I looked to foreign cars for anything "performance" for quite a while now, because the domestics just seemed to need too many costly repairs. As I browse this forum, I see a lot of talk about $1,500 here and $900 there for things like radiators and failed parts of the power convertible top, and some rumbling about head gaskets blowing fairly often on the Northstar V8? Should I be concerned, since I can't get a factory warranty anymore on this '05, or is that more an exception than the rule?

The experience of any one individual can easily be different from what counts as average.

Yes the 2004 and first half 2005s had some early problems that were often fixed with better software and true some components needed to be upgraded, headlamp housings, water pump, radiator and sensors in the roof mechanism come to mind. With those done, the XLR seems to be doing well, but having a good relationship with your dealer is going to help, and that dealer needs to have an XLR trained tech.

At heart though, in the XLR you have the excellent N* (the very real head gasket problems the N* had were pretty much fixed by around 2001 with a change to the casting process or some such) fitted to a Vette C6 chassis and reasonably common transmission, ie for the powertrain and chassis you have a GM/Cadillac with common components. You also have this web site. My 2004 has had the front timing cover and gaskets replaced with the improved ones too. You also get a very sharp styled machine, with Cadillac ride. Why look further?

What warranty will the dealer offer? Can you negotiate parts at dealer cost and a low labor rate if things go wrong say 3mo after purchase? Much of the 'big' problems were covered under recall or warranty by Cadillac, so have probably been done, check the history.
