: FOB Questions and thoughts
C-A-R-S 07-19-2008, 09:35 AM Because I don't want to be stuck with a dead fob, I ordered 2 batteries and a spare fob from my dealer.
Thought #1
I thought it would be a good idea to keep a spare battery in my trunk, that way if the fob failed, I would just use my key, open the trunk, replace the battery in my fob, and down the road I go. :party
Question #1
When the battery is replaced in the fob, does the fob retain it's memory or does it need to reprogrammed?
Thought #2
If the fob retains it's memory, I would like to program my third fob as a spare, remove the battery from it and hide it and the battery in the car somewhere so that if my regular fob dies for some reason other than the battery( like I go swimmin' with the fob in my pocket :nopity ), I would again just use my key get into the trunk, insert the battery into the pre-programmed fob and down the road I go. :party
Question #2
Does this make sense?
First Robin 07-19-2008, 11:23 AM Gee, I would just call Roadside Service, why go to all that trouble? Robert

If you are on your way to work, meeting or appointment or traveling .... it would be to his benefit to have an extra battery on hand.
When Ray's fob battery failed, thankfully we were in Albuquerque .... but there was a Cadillac dealership on the same street. Had that message appeared at our next stop, which was in the middle of No Where, NM we could have been waiting for a long time for that simple little battery.

standby 07-19-2008, 07:38 PM Good reason to take two fobs..............always. My second one is in a water proof bag in the trunk and my key for the bumper is hanging under the car.:bs Time, Robert .....

Is the battery installed in the fob?
Is the trunk protected space, so the car can't sense the fob?
standby 07-20-2008, 07:47 PM That would be a yes and a yes and the car doesn't detect the second fob. My car is in the garage five days a week so I'm not concerned with the heat.

Tek King 07-22-2008, 09:54 PM Can't we just call On-Star and have them open the car remotely then pop the trunk and get your spare fob from the trunk well?
popbigguy 07-22-2008, 11:33 PM the car doesn't detect the second fob.
Bobo
Why wouldn't the car detect the 2nd FOB in the trunk? Didn't the engineers tell us that there is a 3rd antenna in the the trunk area? I would think that if you're storing a FOB in the trunk, someone could at the least, come up to the car and open the trunk, couldn't they?
Chad
Lola's mom 07-23-2008, 12:27 AM Pop .... that would be easy to find out ....
Tomorrow I will put mine in the trunk and see!

homegameroom 07-23-2008, 06:05 AM Per our Tech Session in Bowling Green, i THINK the fob will work, even without a battery, AS LONG AS you can get in the car!
I keep my key tie-wrapped to the skid plate in the front. If you put the fob (even with no battery, supposedly) in the slot in the glove box the car should start. I usually put the extra fob (with no battery) in the trunk when traveling JUST IN CASE i lose the one in my pocket. No, I haven't tried it yet....
I haven't tried this, but it might be worth demonstrating to yourself just for the peace of mind.
All cars may vary..... :lol
gambling man 07-23-2008, 09:04 AM The car (at least my 05) will not recognize any FOB in the trunk. Also, if you don't subscribe to OnStar, they won't open it either. Lastly, it's likely that whoever gets called from roadside assistance has never even seen an XLR.....hence they won't be able to open the doors. Believe me, I've been through all of it when I locked my coat (with my FOB) in the trunk.
SilverX 07-23-2008, 09:30 AM I did that too. Left my jacket in the trunk and voila. :eek The car is locked and won't see the FOB. :cry I understand the FOB will work without battery only in the front FOB pocket.

XLR28 07-26-2008, 11:35 AM Question #1
When the battery is replaced in the fob, does the fob retain it's memory or does it need to reprogrammed?
C-A-R-S,
I replaced my fob battery at walgreens in Bowling Green during RIII and yes the FOB retained all information and did not need to be reprogrammed. It was as simple as opening the FOB and matching up the battery number (I cannot remember it right now). So your plan sounds sound to me.
Ben.
XLR_Lover 07-26-2008, 04:06 PM If anyone cares to jot this battery # down and maybe keep it in your glove box or console it may come in very handy some day:
