: Engine Hesitation

My 2006 with 22K miles is developing a distinct hesitation. When accelerating from 20mph up to 40-50mph the engine shutters and sputters. Once up to speed over 50mph smooth as can be. If I accelerate with a heavy foot there is no hesitation.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Any ideas on cause? I am using premium gas.

Under warranty of course but if it's something simple I may save myself a trip to the dealer. Thanks

Sorry no one came to your aid on this one, but we haven't heard of this in four years. Your going to have to take it in. Sorry for the delay in the answer

I have an '04 with approximately 35k miles, and have been having a similar problem for approx. 2yrs. Under lite throttle 25 - 35mph (around 1,200 - 1,700rpms), engine has slight but noticable surge (mix of hesitation and surging). Heavy acceleration - no problem. Situation is worse when car is cold.

Dealer has reprogrammed ECM at least 5 times (at two different dealerships) - to no avail. Premium fuel makes no difference. They have yet to find a cause for this. I continue to list this as an issue everytime car is in the shop. Any insight would be great... I just put my foot on it starting out when the car is cold.

I actually did start a blog on this several years back, but never really heard much back. Best of luck to all here...

Caddy726:

What I have learnd from Mr. XLR aka Allen is that there are some dealerships that have Certified XLR technicialns and many that do not. since I don't know your dearerships I really can't say if they are using the hit or miss approach or not.

I do know that the electronics on the car record/store issues like your and that the diagnostic machine is capable of working thru the problem to a accurate solution.

I too have a 2004 and haven't personally experienced the condition....yet. My guess is that it may have to do with where the timing is currently set.

Here's some ideas go to another high volume gas station that pumps fresh gas and try one more time to see if the issue goes away perhaps using high test.

See if there isn't another dealer reasonably close by that has trained technicians and try to get them to look at the problem.

Allen is on here fairly often and may offer up more solutions for you to try.

I have a great relationship with my dealer and will ask them if they are aware of your issue and what the solution was/is.

Also there is a GM/XLR "knowledge database" that service technicians can look at to see if the problem has been reported by anyone all over the country/world and what was done to fix it.

We'll "Getter Done" so please be patient.

Not sure if related or not, I too have an 04 and had some general sluggish performance. Also every day when cold when I switched from Reverse to Drive and accelerated the X would delay for a sec still rolling backwards and then lunge forward.

The dealer tried to sell me on a "Drive by wire" excuse but I press him on it. After a few times to the dealer and speaking with the factory team they issued me a non-published Transmission firmware that was completely corrected the problem. (The patch was explained to me as a secondary pump pressure change)

The shift points seem more aggressive and linear across acceleration. Prior to the patch I would hit the gas to pass and sometimes it would drop into passing grear and the motor would scream while the tach came up and then decide that it needed another gear and then the X would launch like a rocket.

I really really miss a clutch – I wish they would make a manual version.

Some of these vehicles might be corrected with a data update. Have your dealer check to see if your car has the most up to date technical data download.
