Bobo, I'm hearing a clunking sound when I accelerate after a stop and then right before I come to a stop or coasting to a stop. Is this what you had? It almost sounds like my CDs in my cd compartment are boucing to and fro when stopping and going, but they're not. I'd like to know something before I take it in.....

thanks....

Darrell,
I wish it where the same but is not. I get this noise when I go over small bumps in the road as if the exhaust was banging against the frame somewhere, but they couldn't find anything so in order to bill GM they put new straps on the sway bar in the rear...........that's just not right.

Just had my service writer print out #07-04-20-002A: as I am having chatter type noise on slow sharp turns. This bulletin also covers the Real Axel Clunk. Will be making an appointment today with my Service Writer. He told me because the XLR is a rear wheel drive the back wheels are pushing the car straight forward instead of the direction the wheels are turned, that is why I had the lady service writer print out this bulletin for me. Geeeeee I am old, learned to drive on rear wheel drive cars and trucks and never heard of his excuse because they just didn't act that way and shouldn't now. First Robin aka Robert

The problem is that the friction plates in the differential are sticking to each other when turning. The new differential fluid will allow them to release when turning a corner.

Taking my XLR in to service Tuesday at 9:00 A.M. to have the Differential Fluid changed. Talked to the tech that does all my work and he knew exactly what I was talking about as did my salesman that used to be the service manager. Hopefully this will take care of my problem. Robert

FWIW: There are earlier postings on ths subject that support changing the fluid and putting in an additive. (Also used on Corvettes I think)

It may take more than one change to permanently eliminate the noise so if it crops up again don't think you are crazy.

Thanks for the advise and also thank you Bruce. I think sometimes my service advisor tries his best to make me think I am crazy. I bought an 04 SRX for my daughter which she drove for a year. She complained the entire year that it wasn't doing what it should in the mountains and off road. The reply was she didn't know how to drive. That was rather an insult to me since I am the one that taught her to drive. At the end of twelve months I took it in with my daughter. Guess what, it was rear wheel drive, not all wheel drive. A lot of red faces as you can imagine. It was replaced very shortly with an all wheel drive.

This new Dexron LS gear lube should do the trick on the first visit. It already has limited slip additive blended in it.

Thanks Bruce,
I will check with Christa to make sure they have the Dexron LS, if not she can order it in before Tuesday. Robert

Thanks. Hopefully it should.

ALSO, I have been thinking about my now fixed right rear brake issue, the abnormal pad and rotor wear.

I am wondering if some of the rear end clunking noises that people were complaining about were a result of the pads binding up/sticking. Inother words when you backed up the pads were forced to brake loose.

Just a thought. I have one of the "salty" 2004's. So this issue may have been detected early on and corrected with some Bremo silicone lube on the metal parts.

I know the binding cost me some of the expense to replace the brakes a little earlier than I would have normally had to.

I wrote it off since I'm happy that the brakes now work as they should.

Bruce, Having one of the best dealers around I'm having a bit of a problem with them trying to blame the fact that my rear is dropped about a half inch on the lowering bolts and they are trying to tell me that this is why I get a banging sound like the exhaust is hitting in the rear. This doesn't sound right to me and wondered what you thought.
If it is hitting why don't they show me where it is hitting instead of blaming me for dropping it a half inch? I would be more than willing to let them set it back up if it would stop and have it re-aligned and pay for it, but it seems like they want me take it back to the alignment shop that dropped it.
