Everybody complains about state taxes and people forget about license renewal. Our state averages about 7% which is higher than many, but our anual renewal is just 90.00. This is the same amout if you drive a $10,000.00 vehicle or a $376,000.00 Rolls Royce Phantom.

But When your purchasing that very high price item, and you live in a state that has a 0% or slightly greater state sales tax, your big savings is on the initial purchase.

Well, sorry to say, Nebraska doesn't cut it there either:

Sales tax: 5.5+%

Income tax 6+%

Who would have thought Nebraska would hit you so hard???

Florida registration is only about $45 for the XLR or the above-stated Rolls! $27 if you own a VW Bug.
And we have NO income tax!!!

These are all things to consider if you're thinking of a move to another state, especially if you have the choice and don't have to move because of business.

I'll make more people happy!! Lincoln, NE, where I live, also has a city sales tax. No 5.5% here!! With the city tax it's 7%! Inwhich I also had to pay when I purchased my X-V. Figure that out on a $100K car!!

Many states use the current Blue Book, or equivalent, value.

The state of Michigan uses the original sticker price of the vehicle to determine the registration fee. The fee is fixed every year for the life of the vehicle. I believe I paid $375....which gave me a shock. If it was in the thousands, I would seriously consider an overthrow of the government. Oh, and the sales tax is 6%

I'll give ya a break down as to how the great state of NE does it!

$30 Motor vehicle fee
$20 Registration fee
$30 Message plate fee (I could drop this but wouldn't have my XLR-V lic, that's no fun)
$49 Wheel tax Every car has this!! Trucks are even more!
The rest is Motor vehicle tax based on the value of the vehicle. It does drop a little each year. What they base the value on I don't know.

Sooo,,,,,,, If you keep a car for say 10 years or even 15 years. You'd still pay the same fee?

I guess that might be ONE good thing about Ohio- I pay less than $40 a year. Well, that and we have plenty of water at our disposal, as long as Lake Erie doesn't dry up (or catch on fire like the river did years ago).

Of course, I'm taxed like crazy everywhere else!:banghead

I don't know how many states are the same, but the fee never changes over the life of the car.......

In Kansas (where my car is registered) there is a $45 registration fee. There is also property tax, but being active duty military I get two cars tax free. So for me, its just $45 a year every June. (I feel you Chad - sorry)

I am also a resident of Washington, so I have no state income tax either.

Another perk for serving in the military.

So, about $1,600 is tax on the value of the vehicle .... it would be interesting to know if that is based on purchase price and always the same or if it drops with Blue Book values each year. Wow, that is still an amazing amount for registration. The tax starts out at $110 before even adding a vehicle. I always thought our registrations in California were too high ... but I think you win .... Owning a couple of cars could kill the annual budget. :eek

The tax does drop some every year. Because the value of the vehicle drops. For example, my boy's 68 Mustang inwhich we ran regular plates for a few years before getting historical plates was like $60-70 every year with all the same fees as listed before above. So the value tax never goes down to "0".

It's kind of like radioactive rads never leave your system completly if your exposed. They diminish with half lives, but are never all depleted.
