: paint issue in one spot
COMFORT ZONE 04-04-2008, 10:49 AM I had a small spot on the roof that when I bought the car that looked like a small rock chip on the paint. I have had the roof painted twice in the last few weeks and they even ground the area filled it in and then repainted it. The small hole in the paint keeps coming back in the same spot. It is very tiny, about the size of a pea, but it drives me crazy. Any ideas? The cadillac body shop in town, mentioned taking the headliner out, drilling out that area, filling it with a plug and repainting it. They think some acid or maybe even brake fluid from the car above when it was initially shipped could be the culprit.... HELP !!! :banghead
xlrjim 04-04-2008, 12:02 PM Hi, Where is the reoccuring chip located on the top. Mine was about 3 inches in about 2 feet back from the front. After two repaints the dealer found that one of the screws from the trunk assembly was hitting the top while the top was retracted.
Good luck

That was going to be my assumption. Something happening when the top is down. Mine had a small spot also, but I have fixed it and it hasn't returned.

XLR I FL 04-04-2008, 01:37 PM You guys are dead on!!!!
I mentioned this to the XLR plant manager last year during our tour and walked over to the line and showed him the screw stud that was doing it. (He's retired now--I think)
It seems that the top does not fully go down in the trunk and lock in place. It goes far enough for the top down software to think it's "OK" to go to the next phase of putting the top down though. I think later software updates may correct this issue. (I could let the top go to the phase and then lift the top up enough that if the top was not secured and the trunk lid was down and you went over a bump it would "hit" the screw.
RECOMMENDED: IF you keep having this problem see if you have the latest top software to control ups and down and the solenoid switches.
IF you are going to Bowling Green they can do it there.
Regards
COMFORT ZONE 04-04-2008, 04:24 PM This is exactly what the problem is with mine. I just called the shop and they are thrilled you guys new the issues.
Now, since I am certified, will the software update be covered under warranty? Is it possible for my local dealer to install these updates? I will be going to BG, but I hate to wait until then.
XLR_Lover 04-04-2008, 05:49 PM They certainly should be able to; and for FREE!!

XLR I FL 04-08-2008, 11:42 PM IF YOU HAVE THE PROBLEM take your car to your dealer so they can fix it.
Just explain the issue to them and get them to load out the software. They may also need to replace some switches too that aren't working as well as they should.
After it is fixed and the top is working to your satisfaction then get the top paint work done. That way it will only have to be done once.
Please keep us all up to date on your progress.

That is what I did. The local dealer fixed the spot and repainted the top twice, before I posted the problem on this forum. As soon as I posted the problem on this forum, other forumites were able to identify the problem that the dealer had not. Which makes sense, if you read above, other people had multiple repaints before the culprit was identified.
My problem is this: The lady at the service department of the local dealership opened a book, when it did not show this problem as a recall issue she looked at me with a blank stare. I explained the whole issue and what needed to be done to fix it and still got the same stare. They are supposed to look into it and call me back, but I have not heard from them.
standby 04-09-2008, 01:18 PM Did you stare back and then say "WHAAAAAAAAT". Then say "fix it or talk to my attorney".

XLR KEN 04-09-2008, 04:35 PM Many of us got the same blank stare when we took our XLR in for headlight replacement due to melted lenses. I believe that over a dozen of us went to the dealerships after RII and they all ultimately changed them out, but there was no Tech Bulletin or Recall on the headlights melting either.
Who ever has photos as to the location and detail, please post. I want to identify the possible problem if was to occur. I've had so many software updates, I was probably covered, but I'm still curious as to the location.

COMFORT ZONE:
I deal with the Service Manager and if I don't get anywhere then I'll have a conversation with the General Manager.
There are people in each Dealer that is licensed to sell XLR's that are Factory trained to resolve the technical issues. We were told at BG II that NOT ALL CADILLAC DEALERS ARE CERTIFIED TO WORK ON THEM. If they are you'll get a higher level of attention.
Ask the dealer if they are XLR Cerified to work on them If you are sure you are getting the correct information then a call to Cadillac Customer Service will get you an answer--I think.

My local dealership has only been selling Cadillac for about a year or two. They bought out another dealership. I am 30 minutes from Bowling Green, I may check with the dealership there. I will be out of the Country for a week or so, but will check when I get back. I will post my progress on this issue.

Spanish_Emarati 04-10-2008, 12:12 AM guess what, i have the same spot in the same place excatly.... :)
COMFORT ZONE 04-10-2008, 04:15 AM The photos show the spot and the culprit. When the top closes, it goes too far and that pictured bolt hits the paint. When I bought the car, it had a very deep spot due to this. It looked like a rock chip. I had it repainted two days after I bought the car and it kept coming back. It was not until posting on this site, were we able to find out why.
Spanish_Emarati 04-10-2008, 10:45 AM Thanks for efforts and pro pictures..
STARBLACK225 04-17-2008, 08:13 AM HAHAHA! I had the same f----ing spot on my STARBLACK and 1 week into my Alpine White SAME SPOT!
XLR_Lover 04-17-2008, 11:02 AM SEE!!!!
They don't even listen to us when the problem was shown to the plant manager at RII by XLR I FL!!!
So, if they don't listen for something as serious as that they absolutely won't listen to the smaller things we suggest!
GEEZ!!!! :rant

Spanish_Emarati 04-18-2008, 12:25 AM is there anyway to ask GM about this issue to be solved as warranty ?? any procedcures ??
COMFORT ZONE 04-27-2008, 04:54 PM I called Cadillac and they apparently called the dealership. When I pulled in on the 14th, the service manager was expecting me. He was immediately helpful, he listened and understood the issue and stated they would fix it. I left it that day in the shop and have been in Ireland since that week. It is not ready yet, but I am looking forward to getting it back.
Has anyone else noticed a huge language barrier when you call the Cadillac customer service line? :banghead
SilverXLR2004 04-27-2008, 05:23 PM Me too but on the right side (passenger side)!
guess what, i have the same spot in the same place excatly.... :)
COMFORT ZONE 04-29-2008, 02:40 AM I went to the dealership yesterday and the service manager told me the software updates had been preformed and the problem still occured. He did some research and found a previous bulletin that said the top's struts would need to be replaced for the top to consistantly be locked when closed. It seems it does not lock in place every time the top is put down. This causes it to bounce while being driving and allows the top to hit that bolt. They are replacing the struts, testing the top and will paint it when thay are sure it has fixed the problem. :skep

I went by on Thursday and they said they had it fixed and it just needed to be painted. I went by yesterday and it had been moved to the body shop, but had still not been painted. I am missing some of the best convertible days of the year !!! They really had a hard time working with the top. They said it was a big learning experience for them ...glad I could help :banghead

sarjoassoc 07-10-2008, 10:38 PM In regards to your paint chipping, I believe if you check the position of your top assembly when secured in the trunck you will find that the mounting screw or screws are to long for the fit clearance which will cause the paint. FIX: If this the problem take a file or grinder and level or reduce the excess length of the bolts.Goodluck I have a pilotcar #53 and it had that same problem.
