: Squeaky Engine Belt
SilverXLR2004 04-03-2008, 11:58 AM 4 months ago, the engine belt of my XLR was squeaking (only when the engine is cold 40 celius or below). I sent it to the dealer for a check up and they fixed it for me within two days. They claimed that they lubricated the belt. In fact, the problem disappeared. Just today, i switched on the engine and i heard the same sound from the same place. I'll send it again after three days. any Ideas how to solve the problem? I think a member here is more experienced and more helpful than our dealership service manager in Dubai.
BTW i was wondering, what kind of lubricant did they use to lubricate the belt?
KY lubricant or maybe Body Lotion? Any Ideas?
556393 04-03-2008, 07:17 PM From your stories about the dealership where you live,...... maybe they are using the KY jelly on you. :lol
RickH 04-03-2008, 07:28 PM If you are sure it's the belt that is squeaking, lubricating it is only a temporary fix. Replace the belt.

SilverXLR2004 04-03-2008, 07:33 PM This sounds the most appropriate action to do. Logically, they should have replaced the belt from the very first time i complained about it. Sounds like they didn't have the part in stock so they used ky lubricant instead :lol

jaxsully 04-04-2008, 10:03 AM I have this same problem, but it is difficult let the service department hear it as it only happens on cool morning and I live in FL!!!
Also I thought this also might have been related to the Idler Pulley problem that was discussed in detail.

XLR KEN 04-04-2008, 12:22 PM I don't know if they still exist, but does anyone remember the old "resin stick" that you'd rub against the belts to stop the squealing? I haven't used one in over 30 years...............but it worked!
RickH 04-04-2008, 12:42 PM Yup - I remember the resin stick. A buddy of mine tried applying it while the engine was running. He lost his thumb.....................well....didn't really lose it....we picked it up off the ground for him.:eek
XLR I FL 04-04-2008, 01:43 PM I still think you are in a VERY DIFFICULT environment over there. What may work here to resolve the problem may not work there.
As far as belt lube there are several aftermarket lubricants HOWEVER if I were in your situation I would make them re lube it or replace the belt.
I am assuming you are still under some type of warranty. If not you may have to pay for it.
Good Luck
sunburn 04-04-2008, 01:53 PM Everything I've ever read and heard is that you never put any lubricant or no squeak spray on a serpentine belt. I had an issue with my water pump leaking just enough to wet the belt with anti freeze but not enough to show on the floor. I would get a squeek from the belt for about 1-2 minutes after starting and then everything was OK. Once the pump was fixed and the belt replaced it's been silent.

SilverX 04-04-2008, 03:44 PM :iagree Lubricating the belt just buys time. It makes you believe the problem is gone but does not fix the root cause.

SilverXLR2004 04-04-2008, 09:14 PM LOL, warranty? Recently, I had a probblem wwith the passenger airbag sensor. They will change it and i will pay for it! thanks to Karyn Yufenu | Operations Leader in GM company, who claimed the warranty starts at the date of manufacturing, to support the business of GM in the middle east.

XLR_Lover 04-04-2008, 11:28 PM The warranty starts at delivery--at least here in the States.

SilverXLR2004 04-05-2008, 02:25 AM here as well. But I found out that it was sold to a customer before me, and he didn't drive it. Instead, he offered it for sale in a showroom in Saudi Arabia. It stayed there until july 2007 that when i bought it! it costed me $41k and it had 100 miles only!!! yes one hundred only!! Despite the problems i faced, i still think it was a good deal.

XLR_Lover 04-05-2008, 07:28 AM Yes, the deal sounds reasonable enough, except you should have extended the warranty, if they're offered there.

Spanish_Emarati 04-06-2008, 11:42 PM let the engine run, pour water on it..sometimes there are some dusts or small pieces rubbing...am not joking... just pour like water on the belt while running and see then :)..i did this long time back with other cars and always worked and never came back...
about lubrication, they apply lubrication when the belt is new but i dont advice any lubrication since belt has to be fixed and not loose by adjustable pulley...just try water and see...:) sounds crazy..it wont harm..
ccclarke 04-27-2008, 01:47 PM Belts shouldn't squeak. Ever. This indicates an alignment/adjustment issue along the belt travel path, be it an idler pulley or belt pre-tensioner. (Worst case, a worn bearing.) Lubricating a belt only hides the symptoms, rarley fixing the cause.
