I've just replace the factory setup with a Pioneer AVIC Z2, blue tooth, xm radio,
ipod, and backup camera. I am very pleased with all of this but one question.
Does anyone know if the cruise control is bused thru the factory stereo.
I've lost my cruise. I have checked all fuses and connections, anyone have a thought on this. Thanks

Did you lose the HUD or the Cruise Control capability?

I gave up onstar but only the cruise is not working. HUD is ok

Wow that sounds great! I've been contemplating something similar... did you do the work yourself, or have a shop do it? Could you PM me with some information about what the price range was if you had it done by an installer?

Did you pull out the amp and CD changer as well? How about the speaker system? Do all your chimes still work, etc?

I have the shop manuals at home; I'll check out the cruise circuit to see if anything funny might be going on. From what I recall from looking at schematics, I don't think the radio was involved with the cruise system.

I also hae the schematics- it does not appear that the cruise is hard-wired to the factory radio. It also looks like there are multiple fuses - one is also under the hood (apologies for that, since you're probably aware of them all and checked them all).

But with that crazy GM high speed LAN, who knows how everything connects?

I hope you're able to solve it!

Just a followup to anyone that is interested. The cruise control is bussed thru the factory radio. What we have to do is T off of the wiring and hook up the factory radio. We are going to install it in the trunk inside the storage compartment. You do not have to power on the radio, it just needs to be hooked up.

I just watched a demo on the Pioneer. Nice radio and gives you all the things GM left out. To bad Cadillac won't reverse engineer. They ask us what we would like to see on the car, but fail to deliver. And will change it just enough that it won't fit but one year. CC wired through the radio. I wonder what Cadillac pays their people to come up with that stroke of genius?

I just had a Kenwood aftermarket stereo and some new speakers installed this weekend. Pics when I finally get a camera out to my car. It's working pretty well; works with iPod and bluetooth for the phone. Plus a handy USB plug - it can play MP3s off of any USB hard disk.

Garmin nav, too... pretty slick.

No problems with cruise, even though the stock head unit is nowhere near the car - it's sitting on my kitchen table at home right now.

I'm still waffling a little on the speakers... might need to add some more bass back, especially when the top is down. In all other respects it's a great upgrade.

Had the head unit swapped out today, and added XM traffic. The shop insisted on replacing the unit due to a nearly-invisible scratch. "Not the way we do business" they said. No skin off my back. Pics to come shortly.

Hello all,
I am new.
Got my 2006 Silver/Black XLR a couple fo months ago.
Wow. The coolest car on the planet.

It has a Kenwood DNX5120 stero/nav system installed in it. But it is not hooked to the retained access power (RAP) and turns off as soon as I shut the car off.
I called the Caddy dealer and they said the RAP is connected to the "class II data comm line" and i can not hook the aftermaker stero to the RAP.
I see several of you have had aftermarket steros. Does your radio shut off when you turn the car off.
Which wire it is?
Thank you for your time and help.
Jeff

Hello,
I bought a 2006 xlt that has a kenwwod dnx5120 but it is not hooked up to the retained access power and turns off as soon as i turn the car off.
Does your radio do that or does it stay on until you open the doors?
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff, sorry for the late reply - I'm not around the forum much lately. My radio stays on until the doors open.

Carl,

Obviously the shop that did the install was able to tie your head unit into a RAP circuit. Do you know how? Do you have steering wheel switch operability into the system? Is any entertainment system information displayed on the HUD?

Your new system looks sweet.

Thanks in advance,
CC :cheers

Not off the top of my head, but clearly the original radio was hooked up that way. I have the shop manuals at home, I can hunt down a schematic if you want. I used to have a bunch of PDFs, but I can't seem to find them now.

Do you have steering wheel switch operability into the system?

Yes, indeed! Volume and track up/down. There is some weirdness with the track up/down buttons with the XM radio, I don't remember exactly what it was (I don't use XM that much), but I do vaguely remember it being strange.

Is any entertainment system information displayed on the HUD?

No, and that's almost certainly impossible.

Carl,

If you can figure out how the shop powered your head unit via the RAP circuit, I'd like to know how. I understand how to make the steering wheel-mounted switches work, but can't locate a dedicated RAP line in my shop manuals to the radio or window circuits. They appear to be always hot and controlled by the serial data buss.

Thanks in advance,
CC :cheers

I have all the schematics in PDF - PM me if you want them. It surely must be there, since mine works. I'm not about to take the whole dash apart to figure it out, I'm afraid.

carlnorum can I please get a copy of that schematic?

I have an 05 XLR that came without the XM radio upgrade and I'm trying to determine if I want to replace the OEM radio/nav unit with an aftermarket unit or try and find the parts to add XM to the existing unit.

Thank in advance,

The answer to your question is that you should most definitely replace the garbage OEM radio with a good aftermarket solution. PM me and I'll put the schematics up for you.

I know I'm very late but I just changed mine out for a pioneer avic z1 and everything still works except for my audio sounds bad like the amp isn't providing enough power but the factory speakers can't take another amp on them so I was going to change them all out what size speakers are there in there? I heard 10's in the doors but for the Hi's I'm not sure what did you end up putting in

Hi Carl,

What exactly did you upgrade? Speakers? Locations of speakers? Did you add a sub? Where? Sorry about the inquisition, but I'm interested in upgrading myself, not sure what to do.

Did you have to use a certain interface for your aftermarket install?? If so, what did you use? What year is your XLR?

Hey guys, back again after a long hiatus.

I had the speakers replaced as well, yeah. Those bose things are garbage. I have tweeters in the front corners, and replaced the 10" door speakers with 6.5" full range. Sounds fine to me. I kept the seat speakers stock.

Hey how are you guys? I just happend to come across this thread and decided I would give some input on a few things asked about in it. The whole radio going off when the door opens not when the cars turned off is all relays... you can make this happen with any car with just the right wiring two two relays. Not too hard and can explain if wanted. And the cruise control not working when the stock radio is replaced is absolute bull. Whoever hooked up ur radio just did it how they would a normal radio and didnt do the research for the vehicle. This is also something I can shed some light on. I have been installing stereos in various cars for 13 years now. And am currently taking a course so that I can officially have my MECP cert. (mobile electronics certified proffesional certificate)

so do you suggest a good aftermarket unit with nav/ipod/dvd (that works in motion) that fits into dash,, and works and uses all the existing controls?

thanks!

Hi gang,

I have read a lot about connecting in-cabin units to the "RAP" system inside our cars.

I am an Amateur Radio Operator and have been since 1968 and I've always had an communication radio in EVERY vehicle I've ever owned, rented or borrowed and I've always wired them up to the ACC portion of the ignition switch.
Now with my XLR, it was a little different as I did not want to take apart the dash or anything in the cabin as the radios are mounted in the trunk and they use control heads so they have no DC power from the vehicle's power. They are powered directly from the radios.
I run 2,#8 AWG along the passenger side of the car from the trunck to the engine compartment close to the battery. The negitive side of these wires connects to the negitive battery terminal and the positive sides connects to a 30 AMP Iron core filter choke and that's connected to a 30 AMP switching capacity relay then a 30 AMP in-line fuse that is connected directly to the positive terminal of the battery.

NOW, ONE SIDE (-) OF THE 30 AMP RELAY COIL (that only draws about an AMP or less) IS CONNECTED TO THE CARS GROUND AND THE OTHER SIDE (+) IS CONNECTED TO FUSE # 9 (15 AMP) IN THE FUSE BOX RIGHT THERE BY THE BATTERY!

What I do when I need to find a circuit such as the XLR's "RAP" circuit is to take my VOM (Volt Ohm Meter) and start checking the Fuse Blocks for the fuse that controls that circuit and response the same.

For those of you who want a simple way to connect your aftermarket entertainment systems to the "RAP" circuit, connect an IN-LINE FUSED wire from fuse # 9 to you're unit. Try to have the in-line fuse as close to the #9 fuse inside the fuse box as possible. Also, if your unit draws more that a couple of AMPS, you might want to add a switching relay like I do for my Amateur Radios as they will sometimes draw up to 25 AMPS on voice peeks in SSB transmit mode.

I sure hope this will help simplify connecting to this circuit.

I know i'm forever and a day late with this question but I just found this forum, what kit did you use to install your head unit in your XLR? Metra, Scosche? Also what interface did you use, and were you able to connect your unit to the RAP? I'll have an XLR in a few months and i'm just doing some hard research to make sure I don't end up with buyer's remorse!! Thank you...

Hi Deadringer,
I have tried to up load pictures of mods I've made to my XLR to this site but have been UNSUCESSFUL so far.

Right now, I'm preparing for a road trip in my XLR to visit my youngest daughter in Wisconsin Dells, WI. so I don't have time to fight the software that's supposed to convert and upload my pictures.

I'll be on the road going there for about three days and will be operating on 20 meters around 14.200 Mhz (+/- QRM) starting 6/28/10 and will try to announce my presents at the top of the daylight/open-band hours.
Return days are open ended but am planning on being back home around 7/14/10.
So if you're licsensed for the Amateur HF bands, listen for me and perhaps we'll hook-up on the air.
73, Jack

I've used photobucket.com to host the photos and just include links in the post and it seems to work fine when trying to include photos - have you tried that?

Same problem although the cruise works intermitently. Told by the dealer that the onboard computer is affected by the new audio system and my choice is to revert to the factory unit or live with the problem with the cruise. I prefer the better sound of Serius radio as well as the ipod and bluetooth hook up so I'm going to stick with the Pioneer
