: Emergency Key with Owners Manual

I know Chad (popbigguy) had ordered an additional key for his V and hasn't gotten it yet. And while I was looking in my manual for how to aim the new headlights that just got replaced (and they didn't align them after install - I wonder if that is in the installation proceedure or not?) I found a leather case that held a slim emergency key stored next to the Roadside Assistance card with my Manual.

I did not know that I had 2 keys for the car already. I knew I had 2 FOBs but thought I only had 1 key - until today, after 17 months of ownership bliss.

Just thought I would let everyone know.

Chad, now maybe you don't need to buy that extra $40 key.

Also interesting point - When they put the key into the fob, how does the Valet function work? Is there a valet fob without a key? Did they move the valet lockout switch? I mean, if he has the key he can open the glove box and turn off the valet featrue right?

Just a thought. As of now I don't have the need to leave a purse or other valuables in the trunk when I go to a place requiring valet service so I don't use it.

Ben.

Sorry, but you're losing me on this one. Why does anyone need the key in the first place if there isn't an emergency situation? So wouldn't you just not give the key to the valet, etc. and only the fob?

I believe he is referencing the new fobs with the integrated key.

Yes, I was referring to the new fobs for the 08 models that have the key built into them. Sorry for the confusion.

The 08 Key FOB hides a back-up key which can be removed when you hand your FOB to a valet.

Too bad that fob is not able to adapt to earlier models. Very sleek unit. :thumbs

Hah, I guess I didn't pay attention that they changed them. Anyone have a pic of what they look like?

On another thread, it was stated that the key was different on the new keybob and would require a lock-set replacement on the glovebox and "secret" access.

Now that I've seen it, I bet I could re-mount my original '05 key in place of the one issued with the new keybob. It looks like it can be removed with extraction of the black pin. That'd be less expensive than having to redo on the two locks.

Ken,

It might be that the reach of the key is different, and the old key is too long and will not fit inside the fob's casing. Just a thought.

The electronic part is compatible though?

You just need to have the dealer program it to the car. I don't think there are any compatability issues electronically.

I never mentioned it, but along with being a "High-Tech Redneck", I'm also a certified Locksmith. I have a lot of the "toys" that go along with the trade.

As best I can tell, the mod to the old key would not go beyond a little cut-off of the old key and insertion into the new fob using the same attachment method. That approach would save you the pain of replacing the two lock-sets.

The key is held by a small phillips head screw. It won't take long for a locksmith to fit another key in the unit.
