Hi,
I am new to the forum and I wish I was here to share some joyful story about my XLR. Alas, while I love the car I have a sh$tty roof! I have now had it in the shop five times to try and fix the roof.
GM has replaced all kinds of electronic sensors. Seems to happen after car washes typically. The roof will get stuck mid-way when both opening or closing the roof. Michigan lemon laws say more than three repairs for same problem or 30 days in shop within same year. I have a lemon roof!!! Car has been in shop 20 days this year and 4 times in last year. Called GM and filed compliant and they offered some lame free maintenance program that included free oil and tire rotation. Insulting!!! I am retired and bought myself the XLR as a reward for 30 years of hard work and while I love the car I am afraid to use the roof! When it brakes the 6th time anyone have any reccomendations on what I should do to get GM to give me another car?

I haven't had any trouble in about 8K miles. I was at my dealer's the other day, and the service manager mentioned in passing that anytime an XLR comes in with a problem with one of the electro hydraulic roof units, they automatically replace all 8 because he assumes they will fail soon also. Are you sure your dealer has done that, before you throw in the towel?

Ernie; I feel your pain. We lemoned our 2004 due to repeated roof mechanism failures, the final straw; being sprayed with broken glass when the right/folding window shattered while trying to put the roof up.
My dealer tried replacing the hardware, one side at a time. That helped for about 2-3 days. After that they just made excuses, as did Cadillac.
It helped to have photos of cuts and bloody leather seats.
In the end they bought the car back and made some other concessions. Ultimately, we bought a second one, so I guess the experience wasn't that bad, just frustrating as hell.
My advice would be to prepare all of your documents, indicating repair history, loss of use, etc. and ask for a meeting with the General Manager of the dealership attempting to repair the top. Give them one more opportunity to work with you, after that I would seek legal recourse.
Good luck. :cheers

You may want to try writing to the customer service link for the Bowling Green plant that I found on the forum. While my car has been in the shop for over a month now, they (XLR/GM)did take action, isolated the problem, which is in the software and the engineers are supposed to be working on how to fix my cars problem. (a different one than yours). This was my cars 4th time for the same problem. I am trying to be patient, I still don't know how this will play out. But hey, it's worth a try to get some action.

I've only had one of the roof sensors (the position sensor ion the drivers side) mess up once and the top would go down, but after the top retracted, it stopped. The closeout panel stayed open, etc.. I ended up wiggling the sensor a little bit and haven't had a problem since.
Other than that, a dead battery and having to re-calibrate the windows a couple times, there's been no other real problems. It's never been back to the dealer since new.
