Dear users,

I have a brand new Cadillac XLR 2004 model which I bought on June 2007.
I drove the car for around 1 month and everything seemed to be perfect. One day, the engine light went off, and a message on the DIC appeared saying "Check Gas Cap", I chekced the cap and it was very tight. At first, I didn't suspect anything serious and i thought that the engine warning light will just turn off in a couple of days as it says in the manual. I waited for around four days and nothing happenned, the engine warning light was still on and the DIC GAS CAP MESSAGE is still there. So, I decided to visit the dealer here in Dubai to have my vehicle inspected.

Four days after leaving my vehicle in the dealer, the answer comes: "There is fuel leaking from the left side of the tank and it has to be changed immediately !!. Otherwise, the vehicle would "EXPLODE" at any time". These were the exact words said by the maintainance team supervisor here. I asked about the reason and they told me it is not a manufacturer defect and it is normal to have leaking in the 2004 xlrs. MOREOVER, I HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL OF THE EXPENSES OF THE SPARE PARTS AND LABOUR AND IT WILL NOT BE COVERED BY THE WARRANTY SINCE MY WARRANTY EXPIRED 4 MONTHS AGO.

TWO QUESTIONS REMAIN:
1-IS IT NORMAL TO HAVE A LEAKAGE IN A CAR THAT HAS 800 KM (480 MILES) ON IT??
2- EVENTHOUGH THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED, SHOULDN'T THEY FIX IT WITHOUT ANY CHARGE, SINCE IT IS FUEL LEAKING THAT COULD HAVE KILLED ME ANYTIME?

IN THE END, I THINK THIS IS A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT THAT GENERAL MOTORS HAS TO BE SUED FOR. TELL ME IF I AM WRONG.

It is NOT normal for fuel to leak in XLR's. Ever. It is either a manufaturing defect or accidental damage. Ask to see where it is leaking and make a determination; seams or attachments are likely to be defects, gouges, holes, deep scratches... etc are damage.

Was your fuel tank full? If you see a leak from one of the tanks it's after a fill up. I f this is the case the tank will need to be replaced.
contact customer assistance about replacement of the tank.

Definitley contact Cadillac Customer service. It also sounds as if the dealer you are using is not very professional especially when they state "the car is going to explode"
On a lighter note maybe by that comment the dealer identified that the car was intended for use only in Iraq.:crazy

I have a 2004 (purchased in feb. 2004) It developed a fuel leak at 20,000 miles.
The leak was in the transfer connection between the left and right tanks. It was necessary to drop the transaxle, gas tank, etc to make the repair. It was a warranted item. I used to have photos but my hard disk died and they were lost.
If I were you, I would claim that this was an inherent problem in the early models.

I would think that it would be under warranty even though it is a '04. Is there warranty for cars there? I've been in countries that there is none. When you buy it, its yours. Hope thats not the case. Keep us informed.

an expired warranty is expired regardless of what country you're in.
In the states you might be able to get something like that fixed at no charge or discounted if you made enough noise, but in Dubai, i would doubt it.

Interesting!!! what countries do not have warranty on new cars?

I know in europe any car has warranty, here in germany on german cars it`s 2 years on GM cars it`s three years or 100.000 km (about 60.000 miles).

I agree with 1 XLR, besides read the quote above again. He states he bought a NEW 2004 XLR in June 2007 yet the warranty expired 4 Months ago--this is only August!! He didn't own it when the warranty expired what does he expect? If it was in fact new, you should have checked about the warranty before purchasing the vehicle--just my opinion

Cubby558:coolIf you buy a 06 xlr new right now you still get full warranty starting now, right? also in central and south America and other third world countries like dominican republic, costa rica buy something there you better make sure it works then, cause you can't take it back.

Yes you are correct Galen, and the island is all man-made!! See you next week. Do you have all your "upgrades" done? I'll give you a call this weekend to talk about meeting up in Mt. Vernon with you guys. Have a great weekend.:seeya

First of all, i wuold like to thank all the people who participated in this thread. The car is brand new and I didn't think to ask about the expirement date of the warranty since i got it for only $40 k. The point here is that the problem am having nowis very serious and it would have costed me my life. I think the dealers should be more responsible when it comes to the driver's saftey, espicially when it is a manufacturing defect and the last thing they should think about is money.I believe that if I get an official report from the dealer i can sue GM, since the car has 400 miles on it only!!.
Lastly, if GM headquarter knows what their dealers are doing here, they would revoke the dealership license and give it to someone else.
Best regards,:mad
