: Car Bra
XLR KEN 07-28-2007, 08:20 PM Has anyone ever used a car bra on an XLR? :confused
I have seen what a BRA can do to the paint job, but a lot of high speed, long distance highway miles can be pretty punishing to the front end too.
I've shopped around and have yet find a source. Comments?
XLR I FL 07-28-2007, 08:27 PM I'M a BIG FAN of FREEING THOSE PUPPIES!!! So no bras for my girl!!!
XLR KEN 07-28-2007, 08:37 PM Actually, that was one of the problems I had seen before. Those BRAs rub the front raw....
In the case of cars, the younger ones need them and the older ones, you don't care anymore.

most of us in arab region use shampoo...yes they use shampoo all over hoods and front bumper...therefore only sands sticks and make a shield to prevent any hard object to penetrat the paint.
i heard also there is spraying can which sprays only soft material on the car to protect it ..but i dont know it and never saw it before
some people use greese as well..
hope that might help if there is no bra
but if you are realy like to have one...why not to go to uphostlry shop and fabricate one...you can be the first man with XLR and playboy bra on...make it red :)....jk
Hope that i helped a bit..
XLR_Lover 07-28-2007, 09:39 PM I won this stuff on eBay, haven't tried putting it on yet, but it sounds way better than a regular bra. They say it will last for at least five years. After that you take it off and sell the car with the nose looking like new--we'll see. . .

Lola's mom 07-28-2007, 10:55 PM Did you say cars or girls?
Lots of testosterone in this forum tonight ..... you are very, very bad boys!;)
rufcar 07-29-2007, 04:10 AM This is a tough subject I know what i REALLY want to say but for some reason since its sunday I will behave. Just dont count on that in person!!!
Anyways! the product discussed above is a MYLAR type clear plastic. I was not aware it now came in kits. I have a lot of it on my triple black RUF. If i did not have it on the front of the rear wheels Id have 50% of the paint gone in only a few thousand miles. That was one of the reason I painted the car again. New Porsches that I have seen all have it across there hoods and other vital areas. But it is not real easy to remove, and at high speeds like I mostly drive over 100 tiny stones will still cheep the plastic and the paint. Its a trade off no matter what. Bobs Idea of the Blue painter tape works especially on blue paint! I guess you could find some tapes similar colors to your car but youd never want to leave them on real long because even they get difficult to remove. I guess its all a personal choice. I can tell you this though if you do get chips and you use a pin or a tiny toothpick to touch up the chips and you do tiny drops at a time and build them up, you can go over them later with 2000 wet paper and buff em out and youll never see the chips. It will blend right in but it is very tedious work. Jim
XLR KEN 07-29-2007, 08:41 AM Thanks to all for the ideas and experience.
The thought of smearing shampoo or grease on the front of my XLR isn't a plesant thought, nor sticking plastic film on the front. I've had 4x4 and sedans with the plastic on high-impact areas (wheel wells, etc.), but having it on the front in large areas does not appeal to me.
Highway debri and sand are a problem, but having lived in FL for a few years, I use to dread the two times a year the love bugs would come out. I had one vehicle with pits in the paint within a week due to their corrosive "juices."
I'll keep looking for a source of some removable protection. One that can let it breath around town and one that will protect her under rough conditions; kind of like a "sports bra". :cool

Floyd,
I also bought this on Ebay but haven"t put it on yet. If you do it soon let me know how it goes. I'll do the same if I get energetic this week and decide to do it. I plan on only using it to go to BG and back home and then removing it.

XLR_Lover 07-29-2007, 10:12 AM Cubby,
I'll let you know (like you, if the spirit moves me).
Also, that's a pretty good idea about the removal! Especially if I louse it up (extremely possible!!!):rant

XLR28 08-06-2007, 11:29 AM I had the cadillac dealer in WA put this on for me for a grand. They brought in a specialist that does lots of their corvettes and the like. It coveres the hood up about 16 inches, the insides of the door handle recesses, the door edges, the mirrors, and the front of the bumper. It's washable and waxable and is barely noticable if you don't know it's there. It has saved me a few chips already since I use mine as a daily driver.
Ben.
(It's on the car in my posts/pics over in the pictures of rides thread.)
spotDdog 08-07-2007, 08:47 PM :glol I got one of those clear bras from Extreme city...cheap! It took some time to put on...fits pretty good. Worked beautifully for my drive home from Michigan to Dallas when i bought the car. Pulled it off and threw it away once i made it home...no bugs, no dings, no problem! I did several searches and I could find an EXTREME CITY. I'm looking for a website link too.
I made the mistake of having "Bra" in the search string.....took that out quick.

We were looking for something much more temporary .... like the stuff they put on at the factory to transport the cars .... just for this BG trip ..... anybody??
XLR_Lover 08-07-2007, 11:04 PM Well, there's always the grease, soap and old "standby", blue painters tape. . .:yesnod :lol
Lola's mom 08-07-2007, 11:32 PM Well, we just keep hoping that SOMEONE knows of a well-kept secret product!

Thought about that myself. I'm gonna take a look at the clear carpet protector tape that contractors put down in new homes after they have finished to keep the carpet clean. Will probably test it on the kids car to make sure the adhesive doesn't stick to the car when you pull it off. I also bought the the kit from Extreme City, but don't have enough time to mess with it before BG.

Drive like you stole it....get home....peel off the bra and bugs....and say thanks! :flag

We thought about the same thing ..... the salesperson was concerned about it's melting temp and it adhering to the paint .... since we are coming across the desert that was a "no, thanks ..." Keep me posted on what you find out. Time is short for BG!

You make the installation sound easy .... the site makes it sound difficult and more more permanent ..... we just wanted this for the redezvous trip .... your thoughts??
Lola's mom 08-08-2007, 11:49 AM Well, after reading more and more, I ordered it ... but there is no phone # that I could find to expedite the shipping of it .... but I ordered it anyway .... just crossing my fingers that it gets here before Saturday ..... thanks for your help.]

They were rather fast on the delivery when I ordered mine. Wish I had time to put it on--maybe this Friday. If things go as planned--which they usually don't. Hope you get it in time. See you in BG!!

Lola's mom 08-08-2007, 01:31 PM More on the clear car bra ..... reading further into this ... it appears that this is exactly like the film that is put on cell phones, etc, to keep it from being scratched, and, apparently that easy to remove .... if this is the real deal, what a boon for us. The whole kit for the XLR is $25 ..... and why haven't we heard of this before.
spotDdog 08-08-2007, 09:52 PM Yes the difference between this and the $400 jobs you get a pro shop is this film is a tad thinner, isnt permanent, and $375 cheaper! There is a little more expensive version that you can take on and off....read PIA! It will take you a good hour to put it on. But think of it this way...it's not going on for the life of the car, it's going on for the life of the trip. Just get a spray bottle and keep it wet while it is going on and you wont have any probs. Dont sweat the tiny little bubbles most will dry out...it will all be covered in bugs in a couple hundred miles anyway! Drive on!
BTW...just do a google or YouTube search for clear bra installation video....you'll see

standby,
After you and your group come through OK, AK and west TN, you'll have to have "Mr. Clean's Magic Sand Blaster" to get all the bug guts off the front of your XLR. Wet + Hot + high velocity car = Bug Art
XLR_Lover 08-09-2007, 09:55 PM Actually I found the best and probably cheapest way to remove bugs :eek is to use a damp Bounty, ya know that thing you throw into dryer. It doesn't even have to be unused!
Hate those bugs, actually they probably don't like me much better after I splatter them!!

Do you mean a fabric sofener sheet .... "Bounce" or the paper towel Bounty?? If it is Bounce, here's another tip .... stick a couple in your pockets ... they repel mosquitos!
XLR_Lover 08-09-2007, 11:48 PM OOPS!! Sorry, you're right, Mom, Bounce!!
I'll just throw in a caution here... your paint job has a water-based clear-coat finish. It is purposly a little soft because that tends to "heal" some small scratches and dings, but it can be dulled down easily.
I'm pretty sure that dryer sheets are made with a nylon fabric... much harder fibers than your clear-coat finish.
100% cotton is all you should ever wipe your finish with... wet or dry. Bugs are easy if you keep them wet for about 10 minutes. A cotton mit or towel will take them off with no damage.
Do not ever wipe off bird poop... it has grit in it. Wet it and daub it off instead.
Sponges and other cleaning tools tend to trap any dirt particles and hold them against your finish as you wipe. Cotton towels and mits allow the particles to move around, resulting in less damage over time.
XLR_Lover 08-10-2007, 06:03 AM Thanks! Sounds like very sound advice!
