: XLR Safety Concerns when Traveling Overnight

Some time ago we posted a question related to space available in the trunk area with the top down:

We've got an upcoming trip to the beach (about a five hour drive) we would like to do with the top down, but we've got to take some clothes on hangers that need to be kept flat and are wondering if those might fit without any risk of damaging either the clothes or the top.

As usual, we received some great input from forum members. As a follow-up, we thought perhaps a few of you might like to read about the beach trip and why we didn't take the XLR, which primarily revolved around concern for its safety while parked at night. It did leave us wondering in general how much of a concern that sort of thing is for others when taking overnight trips with their XLRs. (Sure hope the parking area at the Hampton Inn in Bowling Green will be well secured at nights for RII participants - that could be the ultimate vandal heaven!).

We take it to Las Vegas, valet park it .... take it everywhere since it is my dd. I have been most fortunate .... most of the time I see people standing a respectful distance away from it just looking at it .... p.s. the valet boys love driving it! :D

My wife and I take the X when we go to dinner on week nights. We park where we feel comfortable but you never know. I got over being over protective because it can eat you up. Not only for the car but all my stuff. Thats why I have good insurance on all my stuff. If I have an issue, thats what the insurance is for.

Hey Galen, I agree with you. Life is too short to be worrying about what could happen to your baby. Heck my wife drives the XLR daily and we also take our '58 Corvette on trips. Both are well insured. Knock on wood.....no problems! See you in BG!:cheers

I understand the concern but that is what we have insurance for:) As far as anyone messing with our XLR :smash :smash :smash

Both Ella and I really enjoyed your Myrtle Beach story....reminds us of the SOS getaways we used to attend. Thanks for the memories. Hope you folks are going to BG.:party

There have been 3 Dodge pickups stolen from work in the last month but no one has touched any of the 4 XLR's at work. Not a market for stealing for parts and for a joy ride there are more desireable and easier things to steal. I worry more about door dings.

In general, we agree with all the comments and advice about not being overly protective in terms of parking the XLR. And, yes, Ed definitely tends to baby it too much. As we’ve said before, he probably spends more time cleaning it than driving it :lol , but that’s one of his hobbies and he thoroughly enjoys it!

As far as the particular parking situation for the beach trip we referenced, that was more than a little unusual. You would have to see the place to really understand what we mean. The parking is “wide open” and somewhat of a thoroughfare for nighttime partiers going from one location to another and of course the XLR would definitely attract the attention of basically all the passerbys. We just couldn’t get comfortable with it and neither could others who were familiar with the location and were giving us advice (even though we have the best insurance that can be bought). We definitely weren't concerned about the XLR being stolen, just inadvertently or deliberately being damaged.

There’s a related curiosity question for the readers of this forum. When parking your XLR at locations such as malls, do you try to position it well away from other cars to avoid the door dings and such? And if so, how often do you return to the XLR’s spot and find someone has gone really out of their way to park right beside it?

Best regards,
Ed and Sandra

when there is parking away from others I don't mind how far I need to walk. In fact, walking back to my car in the distance is especially satisfying. But that is not always possible in california and you take whatever parking you can get. I don't worry much about door dings since the composite dosen't really ding and you need to really hit it hard to mark the paint. I do however examine both sides throughly upon returning. And yes, you always tend to get the guy who thinks he is cool enough to park right next to you in the back 40!

Learned that long ago; doesn't seem to matter how far away you park from others some smart**s will be parked next to you when you return. That's the way it is in Chi-town area anyway. I'm like the majority here, don;t really worry about much--that's what my insurance is for.:D

There ae some places I just don`t take my XLR to. Shopping mall, movie theatre parking lots, downtown Seattle, and anyplace where the average IQ is less then miles per gallon.I`ve own antique Cadillacs for thirty years... parking far away, taking up two spot is the norm for me.

Needing to pull into a gas station in a bad part of town is my fear. Our state law allows concealed carry. So it has been suggested to me: lay the weapon on top for everyone to see, pump my gas, pick it up again and move on out.

I carry and have had a permitt for the last 15 years. I carry one in my XLR and one in the Eldorado. I am going to run every time but, in case I can`t I`m going to make sure I have something in my hand other than my dufus.

New Mexico, you can carry it on your hip or strapped in a holster on your door panel with bullets in it. I took it out once when I thought I was going to have a confrontation and it's not a good feeling to have it on your lap and shaking. Someone told me after that, never pull it out unless your going to use it.Needing to pull into a gas station in a bad part of town is my fear. Our state law allows concealed carry. I carry but not for the car! I carry for little Ole me, and my business when I leave late at night. Isn't that what Onstar is for?

You can't worryyourself to death but you just have to be careful. I am proud to say through 3 Vipers, 3 Vettes and 2 Xlrs I have never been keyed or trashed.

I once had someone at Barnes & Noble leave a message on my Viper saying "sorry you have such a small penis". They were no doubt there buying Al Gore's book.
