I have used K&N filters on other cars or trucks that I have owned. Adding this to a XLR seems a safe way to improve performance and hp. Has any of you already done this? Thanks G

O' Yea, big time. I know there are two of us that have the Volant cone cool air induction and I had K&N filters before that which are still in my garage hardly used, but they are for the V. $125 for K&N filters and $500 for the Volant system installed. Really, you could do it your self if you have a bladed screw driver

They are yours. If you want them before that. You could send me a check plus postage and will be glad to send them.
Credit score is 836 and Hans in Germany will vouch for my honesty. He sent me a check in my name for $30,000 and change to buy a car for his daughter who was going to school in Santa Barbara, and the car is still in my name until they have it shipped back to Germany.
So $40 isn't a factor, but it will buy a tank of gas on the way back to Kentucky. If interested, I'll give you my address through your e-mail.

Ocool & Cubby, I went on line and I see what you mean. They should be the same. As a matter of fact, I could never tell the difference between the XLR box or filter on my 04 and 06-V. They looked identical in every way including the size. Why is it I know the number for the XLR-V and they don't? I bet it's the same.

Boy am I living in the past. So we went air, 3 o t 4 days for $26 with box. You could have had new ones for these prices. I'm really not concerned about the money. Glad to help out. If I had gone to the PO instead of those little mail places It probably would have been a lot cheaper. Any way.............it's on it's way as of 4:30 PM Tuesday.

It must be cheaper to UPS from here to Calif.
I guess when you think about it, every thing cost a little more out there ? :-)

The correct part number for a 05 XLR is 33-2305. As of 06/07. There is a difference in size of the 33-2063-1 and the 33-2305. The XLR 33-2305 is smaller by a few mm. Its 3 mm smaller in height, 3mm smaller in length, and 4 mm smaller in width. Close, but not the same filter.

so did the air box change from 04 to 05 or is the 33-2305 just a better fit?
If I remember right, the 33-2063 fit very snug in my 04.

Now I have the Volant (prototype) in my V

Galen
06-14-2007, 11:35 AM
The 33-2305 is a better fit. The height would have no effect. The stock paper filter is much higher or taller. The width and length are so close that its not an issue. I think back in 04, K&N didn't have an exact filter to fit obviously, so the 2063 did work. But now the 33-2305 is the perfect fit filter assigned to the air box.

I ran the K&Ns in my 04 XLR but not in the V. In both cars they improved the sound and gas milage. Throttle response seemed improved, but you really don't notice any additional HP. After 450...what's another 12-15??
Actuall, Bob had the K&Ns in his V before he bought the Volants, so he might be able to give a comparison of the two on the same car. I think he said there was not a noticable difference.....but it looks nice!

The filters on a V may add 12-15 but I doubt it would that much on a measly Northstar. I just ordered a Corsa exhaust so I'll be anxious for that to be bolted on. The best I could do online was 1,400

actually, the K&Ns are not expected to pick up that much on the XLR or the V.
The Volant range is 12-15 on the V and probably less on the XLR.

Galen, did you take the padding out in front of your filters? There's padding that stops the air from coming in right in front of the filters and a nice size hole is in there. Here's a shot of the hole
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c302/standby7/airaccess.jpg

Yes, rain or more dust get into the filters but I get significant air, almost like ram air when I'm up over 60 MPH.

O contrare..............Like I said in one of my posts, it's a lot faster above 50 or 60 cause that air is being rammed into the cones. I know you didn't like the idea of removing that padding but you can always put it back if you wanted to test it.

Most of these were done on my 04 XLR. I was the first California owner and the local shops were anxious to have a car to work with. Many of the contacts originated from this forum.
Besides the Borlas and Volants, I also did the prototype for Strut Grilles (retail $5000.)
and paid cost only on my Makavelli Wheels on both cars.
Theres also a company that does a remote control for the convert top on lexus and porsche but were unsuccesful to design one for my XLR.

You could remove it and then make two flaps out of the one and attach it with velcro on the inside near the filters when you have bad weather.
Just a suggestion for more HP

Does the 04 xlr have 1 or 2 filters? The order page has two for the vette but 1 for xlrs. Mine is in the shop so I can't look but am anxious to order with the corsa.
Thanks
