Have a 2004 XLR with approx. 12k miles on it, and is developing grinding noise from the rear differential during low speed (ie. parking) tight turns - both in forward and reverse. This problem is continuing to get worse and worse, and car is off to the dealer next week to investigate.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any input would be much appreciated!!

Cheers....

Go to my posting dated 12/28/2004 Titled Rear End Noise (fyi) in the Cadillac Technical Discussion Section and you will see a number of postings.

Cadillac does have a bulleton out on it.

Many thanks on the thread info - of great use for when I head into the dealer next week. By the way, relocating to Jacksonville shortly - any recommendation on a Cadillac dealer that is literate on XLR issue

Many Thanks

We had this problem fixed recently on our '05 XLR. Our work order shows the Cadillac bulletin addressing the matter as being "PIP# 3559." We don't believe that specific information was in the earlier thread.

Best regards,
Ed and Sandra

I am seeing Caly replacing parts in his rear end in lieu of the fluid exchange with positraction fluid so I am waiting for him to report in after he gets his car back next week sometime. Please watch for his posting to see if the problem is gone and if it is the same as yours.

I had this problem in my '05, and a replacement of the transale lube with the positraction type lube fixed it.

They did the fluid thing quite a while back... 6-8 months or more, and that did cure the grind-thump thing. No problems until the last month where we started noticing a whine... just when holding your speed, it would go away on excelleration or coasting. They tried to change the parts but ended up changing the whole differential.

Just over 20K miles... it's a daily driver. All under warrenty.

There were no leaks or any abuse/habits/events that I am aware of that may have been the cause... I suppose it was just a scuffed up part new or poor assembly from the factory. Same rear-end as used in Corvettes, so I know they have lots of experience with them and that they can take a load.

I took my 05 XLR in about a year ago for noise in the differential. They changed the fluid and the noise want away until a couple of months ago. Took it in on Monday of this past week. I was given a copy of service bulletin #07-44-20-002 issued on 1/9/08. The bulletin covers the XLR and certain corvettes. The instructions (diagrams included) are to yet again replace the fluid with a new formulation. Picked up the XLR yesterday. So far, so good.

PS: Loan car was a new 08 CTS

There has been a few updates on the repair of rear axle shudder. The latest version seems to be taking care of the concern.

When does it happen? What speed? Turning or not turning? Cold or warm?
