Well I hope you are right, GM has a way of cutting corners on things that are not seen to the naked eye. Corvette is an example, its a 55K car and has NO side air bags or roll over protection at all. Much lower end Chryslers and Fords, if not standard at least offer side curtain airbags even the Ford Focus. So I would not be surprised to see GM skirting safety issues to save money as they have been on the C5. Maybe GM feels there are enough buyers to go around so if one gets killed in a side impact or squished in a C5 vert roll over its really no matter to them someone will still buy it. Dont take it for granted that XLR and C6 will have a side curtain system. We are talking GM here not Lexus or M/B. GM is a company long focused on selling Glitz Glamour and HP, safety has never been a top concern. I remember a stupid comment Dave Hill made once at a C5-R outing that they didn't put chrome exaust tips on C5 because it made the car heavier, I can imagine the same excuse being said about side airbags and safety devices. The GM spin Dr. Lives!

It's really disturbing, but I just went to their site and read ALL the info and looked at all the interior pics, and spent 5 mins with the 360* veiw, and I don't see any side airbags:( I can't believe it, but you may be right:( I really can't see them cutting corners that badly though, theres a big difference in what you can put in a car for 50,000 than 75,000:cheers I'm sure we are just missing it:cheers

No I don't think so, I looked for them at the auto show last month. State of the "Arts and Science" this car is NOT. Shame on You GM!

I just can't believe that even GM would steep that low, wouldn't have surprised me 2 years ago, but didn't they just vow that their quality was going up over the next couple years?

Well, this is what get's me so mad at GM. They have all the ability and know how to really do it up right but they can't seem to shake off there past no matter how hard they try. C5 is a great car I have owned 7 of them, BUT! it could have been so much better if they would have spent a little more $ on the interior and other odds and ends, one of them being side air bags, Seats/leather, and a better radio and HVAC control head. All of this can be easly fixed and added but they always fall short and never take it to at least a 9 point car. Im tired of "good enough" from Gm for once I would like to see a car from them on the same level as its over seas rivals. I see XLR falling to the same fate as C5 its a good car but just not good enough, you can see it in the XLRs interior alone, its nice but not on the same level as Lexus or M/B.:(

Ross, Ross, Ross, How many GM automotive forums do you join just to stir it up? How many times have you been banned from corvetteforum alone?

Well Troy, I dont think stating facts is stiring any thing up at all. This is the USA where freedom of speech is for all. I should hope you feel this same way.

C5 was a long-gestation vehicle. When the car was designed, side impact protection and convertible rollover protection were uncommon items seen only in luxury vehicles. And C5 was being built for an uncertain market to a lower price, emphasizing performance over luxury or safety features.

The market today is not what it was in 1993. XLR is a no-sale without all the same "gimme" boxes checked on its spec sheet as its competition. The only way XLR won't have side airbags is if it has something better.

Ranting about XLR lacking side airbags just because you can't see obvious indicators in photos or preproduction cars is trollish behavior, period.

Is it true that drinking too much Fanta makes you high?

These pics are not the clearest but if you look carefully at the top of the seat there is a rectangular box that resembles typical GM SRS side airbag modules.

And this pic shows the location of the doot latch in the body..not the door but if you look closely behind the seat belt latch you will see the logo AIR BAG in the seat material.

??? Maybe I need new glasses, I dont see it. I think the piece on the seat top is there so the shoulder belt will not rub the leather when its put on. Thats just a guess on my part. Anyway, I sure hope you are right, it would be a HUGE mistake for the car not to have any. With any luck someone will be able to give us a 100% answer soon.

OK I just went outside to look at my Tahoe's side airbag door thingy. It is an elongated plastic door about mid seatback on the side. That thing the triangle shape on the seat top COULD be an airbag door but its mounted awful high. It maybe some sort of side head curtain or something else. Im surprised no one knows for sure. We will just have to wait and see I guess. I E mailed Will Cooksey's secratary, I'll get to tho bottom of this!
